Question A Blu-ray carousel player?

A friend of mine says he's waiting to go hi-def until there's a carousel changer available. (He's a Couch Potato 1.1.) Anyone have an educated guess on the ETA of such an animal?

TIA

He could "work out" by manually changing the discs himself... just a thought.

The reason I doubt you will see one anytime soon is because how many DVD carousels do you see these days? I only know of Sony and maybe Denon

I understand the love of carousels -- that's all I had in DVD players prior to my PS3 purchase. With multi-discs being so common nowadays (even with the expanded capacity of BDs) they are a Real Good Idea.

Not only that, but we used to program many Movie Nights with a cartoon (from one disc), and a double feature. Getting up to insert each one is a real PITA, as it destroys the movie experience (at least it does in our home theater, with a 9' screen and a pretty separate "booth" with all the equipment in the back). So it isn't just a matter of being a coach potato.

I suspect Sony will release one eventually -- the mechanics aren't really all that problematic since all you have to do is rotate the physical disc handler and not the reader mechanism. But it will probably wait until BD is the standard in DVD players -- say four or five years down the road. In the meantime maybe you can convince your friend that he will end up with more than one BD player anyway, so he might as well get his first now and enjoy it until the carousels arrive.

Default A Blu-ray carousel player?

That is definitely what I am waiting on before I buy a Blu-Ray DVD player. Hopefully by then, all of the problems that are currently going on with all of the Blu-Ray DVD players would have been worked out. Congratulations to Blu-Ray for almost officially winning the war. I hope you learn something from HD-DVD as to how well their players were made and the reasonable cost to buy them!!!!

This is a lame excuse. I like carousels, too, but come on. Buy him some of that new Blue_Ray makeup and say it'll go good with his skirt.

If he already has an HDTV, there's no reason not to buy a Blu-ray player. This is the message I'm giving all my friends. I tell all my buddies that if they go buy a Blu-ray player, I'll buy them their first movie. That's a good draw.

Huh???

What problems do Blu-ray players have that HD DVD players don't? (Note that I'm not saying that there aren't issues... just that they aren't unique to Blu-ray.) Also, I don't think anyone has EVER made a claim that the Toshiba players were better "made" than the Panasonic, Pioneer Elite, Denon, or Sony players. Hell, I don't think I've ever heard anyone claim that they were better made than the Samsung players. The claim to "better" allways seems to refer to price for HD DVD fans. Speaking of price, the BDA won the war without selling players at a significant loss... unlike their competition which managed to both sell their players at a loss and still lose a format war. So I wouldn't count on the BDA adopting any of the HD DVD PRGs strategies in the near future. They didn't exactly work well for those who came up with the plan.

Anyways, if you're actually here to learn more about Blu-ray, etc, then welcome. We'd be happy to help you pick a player when you're ready. If you're here to mourn the death of HD DVD, though... then it would be best to find another board. You won't find us to be the most receptive audience.

Except that it's not crazy if you have a large investment in DVD already IN a carousel. I've got nearly 500 DVDs in two carousels right now - and that's not including the Extras discs. The DVD carousels didn't take long to come out and come down in price. I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for them.

Disc changers are a good way of preventing damage to discs and also act as media server. As love_blu_or_go_home mentioned there's Sony Home Entertainment Server HES-V1000 - Blu-Ray disc changer / digital multimedia receiver / HDD recorder for $2.5k

There will be others. Just tell your friend to get the HES-V1000 and have him come on Blu-ray.com and tell us how nice it is.

I originally got my first 300 disc changer so my family won't touch my DVDs (very anal about them not being scratched fingerprints, etc)

Unfortunately since I couldn't wait for blu any longer I got a ps3, but it's killing me not to have the large changer. I am actually buying movie in blu that I will only watch since I don't want them to handle the discs.

That 200 disc change would be great if they would only lower the price...once under 1 grand I am there!

That's a rather ballsy thing to say on a Blu-Ray site. I'd take my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player before I ever touch a Toshiba... for HD or SD playback.

My brother, who is vice president of the dealership company he works for. He informed me that Sony is bringing out a 400 disk Blu Ray Carousel player this summer(2009). The standard line will be about $800 and the ES line will be $1200.
