Default PlayOn Media Server - Streaming Netflix to PS3

I apologize if this has been brought up before. I tried searching the forums and I couldn't find anything on it.

Apparently, there is a beta release to PlayOn's new media server, and it allows PCs to stream Netflix videos, among others such as YouTube, to PS3. This is in addition to all the regular video, music, and photo files you're accustomed to getting through a media server. What's really cool, is that it also supports Netflix's Instant View feature.

I just read about it and haven't tried it yet. I don't watch downloaded movies, but I do have a Netflix account for Blu-ray rentals. Since downloads come with membership, I might give it a try just to see how it is. It certainly won't match a BD for video or sound quality, but I do love the fact that the PS3's functionality continues increasing.

Anyway, here's a link to the story:

It's a waste of time IMHO.

I downloaded the latest version and tried it on: Xbox 360, PS3 and Popcorn Hour.

Netflix was a big FAIL on all three.

Either the movie wouldn't play OR it was so choppy that it wasn't worth watching.

Overall, my Popcorn Hour handled it better than the gaming consoles, but it still sucked.

My initial thoughts is that it's a Netflix issue, since I play other media streamed (YouTube, etc) just fine on PH.

Just bringing this post back up, because of the recent talk of Netflix streaming being a possibility. If you have a Netflix account today, I would suggest you give the PlayOn media streamer a shot. I just tried the most recent version this past weekend, and I was surprised at how well it works.

It was easy to install, required no configuration, and high quality full screen videos ran without a hiccup after just a few moments of loading. This was with me using Qwest DSL at around 1.5 Mbs. It allows easy viewing of your instant queue direct from the XMB, so it's easy to navigate and select titles.

It certainly doesn't replace Blu-ray audio or visual quality, but it was great for catching up on missed episodes of Heroes and The Office. It also works well with Hulu and YouTube. PlayOn is definitely worth checking out for On Demand type TV viewing.

They've added an interface for third-party plugins, there's been four or five in the last couple of weeks, and that's before PlayOn's published the full API for making them So Gametrailers, Food Network, Revision3, The Onion, and another website of a less wholesome nature are all already supported. Expect a bunch more as time wears on.

I should note, I suspect Netflix requires a fast CPU than some of the other streams, Revision3 definitely does.

EDIT: In the last couple of days, the playonplugins site has already added an HGTV plugin and a generic video podcast plugin(!).

That's incredible. I'll have to check out the additional plug ins. Thanks for the link.

For Netflix, I'm running a basic dual core setup at 1.9mHz with 2 gigs of ram, and a slow "high speed" connection, and it ran perfectly.

Using both PlayOn and PS3 Media Server make the PS3 a fantastic media extender.
