Default Which would you buy?

I'm stuck in a situation that I can not make up my mind with. I currently own a '96 328is but I've been thinking about selling it to upgrade to a faster car. I have currently spent quite a bit on my car to make it track worthy and it did pretty good at the first race I took it to. My dilema is that my neighbor is selling is M5 that is in perfect condition and he said he would give me a really good deal on it because I'm his neighbor. This M5 was the car that got me into BMWs, had I not driven it a couple years ago I would have never bought the 328is I have now. Also I have found some really nice STi's here in ATL that I can't help but drool over and I originally wanted to sell my car to get one so I can have some fun off-roading rally style. I didn't even consider getting another bimmer until my neighbor offered to sell his M5 really cheap, like thousands of dollars cheaper than KBB.

So what should I do?

1. Keep my 328is and finish making it a track rat (start removing interior, put stage II clutch in and then put larger brakes on, engine is already modified quite a bit and tuned)

2. Sell my car and buy my neighbor's 400hp E39 M5 (flawless condition, he even waxed it with $1,500 wax...to give you some what of an idea about how crazy he is about his cars)

3. Sell my car and pick up an STi and set it up for rally

the insurance for me on the M5 is actually considerably cheaper than my car (I still can't figure that one out) and the insurance for me on the STi is about $30-40 more per month based on the year.

I really can't make up my mind . I love my car now and it is a blast to drive (especially on the track) but I miss getting the chance to take a car off in the mud like I did my Outback. You could not get that stupid car stuck anywhere no matter how sloppy the mud was . Then here is the chance to buy a mint condition M5 that looks like it hasn't even rolled out of the assembly plant yet and at the price he is selling it to me, I can turn around and sell it a year or two later and make money off of it.

AWD FTW!

Being able to enter and exit corners faster with AWD has its advantages on the track!

definitely, when I was at the track in December, the car with the fastest lap times was a '08 STi wagon with coilovers. It was kicking the snot out of Lotus's, Mercedes, BMWs, Corvettes, etc...

also Merc, are you on bimmerfest, bimmerforums or club bimmer?

What's your budget?

Personally, I would do one of the following:

1. 2001 2.5 RS Coupe with STi Swap - SLEEPER FTW!

2. Find an old BMW 2002 and restore that sucker!

I was gonna ask how old you are, but then I checked out your profile and found out the answer myself. This is a completely normal question for someone "your age." My personal opinion -- and I do love me some fast car -- is to focus your attention on an M5 and just have a nice ride that goes fast on the roads.

Track racing, while fun, isn't really beneficial at all unless you're going to do it professionally, or can be sponsored or something so you can have the best gear on your car. Otherwise, you're just a guy driving around on a track and ruining his daily driver (I'm assuming you're talking about your daily driver here; correct me if I'm wrong). Racing a car is hard on it. Then there's all the safety stuff...

I thought about getting an older scooby and doing a motor swap
I'm not really into BMWs older than the E30s, so no go on the 2002. My budget is 20k tops.

Just a expensive hobby is all it is to me now. My neighbor has tracked his DD BMWs in the past and never had any problems and that is why I was considering making my DD BMW a track car as well, they are pretty tough little cars. Just there is a good reason why they call them the $1k cars (everytime they break it costs a minimum of a $1k ). It would be nice to have the space that the M5 offers, that car is huge compared to my E36! It has every option known to man on that thing as well including the dvd navigation system and don't forget the powered head rests (come on, really? haha). Parts are going to cost close to the same to replace as my car and my neighbor gets big discounts on OEM stuff because he is a vendor for the local BMW dealerships. Just it will not get anywhere near the MPGs I'm pulling on my car now, but as my neighbor has told me numerous times since I got my BMW, if you want to play you got to pay. I'm just really loving the fact that my insurance is sooo much cheaper . Just I will have to make payments on it, I hate making car payments

I was waiting for someone to come along and say that. It seems that there are more Evo lovers on this forum than any other car make

All though I really like their design, I'm a Subaru guy at heart

EDIT: Here are pics of the said M5, the Artic Silber E36 in the middle is mine and the white M3 is his other M car that he is selling as well. He is trying to get a M6

this was taken a few hours before I put my M3 bumper on

If it's any consolation, I definitely like yours out of those three. It's definitely truest to the "Euro" look that BMW is famously known for having. I like the headlight treatment and the ride height. Both are perfect in my book.

You might hate me after I tell you this: I've got an Acura.

Get the M5...it's head and shoulders above the rest of those choices.
