Default Panasonic DMP-BD 60

I was wondering if anyone has seen this player at Best Buy? I have read a couple reviews and I think I am ready to go ahead and get a standalone Blu-ray player.

I think it's generally available at most Best Buys by now for $299. I know my local NH store has had it at least a week.

Alright, so I picked up the Panasonic today and it is having all kind of playback issues. On Chris Botti's blu it doesn't want to bitstream sound to the left rear channel, kinda wierd, but with john mayer, it doesn't want to bitstream dolbytruehd at all. How is the playback with the Samsung BD-1600. I might return this for that.

Ok. So I put in a bunch of Blu's with DolbyTrueHD and the only one that the audio works is Chris Botti, except for the rear left channel. Which doesn't make sense. The rest show up as Dolby Digital. Any ideas?

Okay. I updated it and then turned off the secondary audio which was causing it to not play in true hd except for the new chris botti. Now all is fine and I am going to listen. I'll post my thoughts later.

I know this will come off as sounding really silly, but you could read the owner's manual and figure out how to set it up properly.

Well, its fine now, except for the Chris Botti Blu-ray. For that blu, when its PCM it works fine but with Dolby True HD bitstream the left rear channel doesn't work. Maybe a disc problem?

The video is excellent. I wouldn't say that it is much better than the PS3, but it definitely has a slight edge. As far as audio goes, there is no contest. Having my receiver doing the decoding instead of the player makes it a completely new experience.

I'm glad to hear you got it working......that is very odd about the Botti disc not playing the left rear channel........strange. The Panasonic players have been some of the most reliable players out there.

Did you check your speaker connections on the receiver?

Yes. All other blus sound and work just fine. I think it's a reading issue. I thought maybe it had something to with it being 7.1 but my Nightmare Before Christmas works just fine.

Alright so after getting everything straightened out and only having one minor quirk with the player, I am ready to post more about it. First off, this is a damn good Blu-ray player with quick loading time and excellent playback. The picture is as good if not better than that of the PS3 and being able to Bitstream audio to my receiver for decoding has made a world of difference. One thing I notice is less noise in the channels. For instance when I switch between PCM and Bitstream, there is a lot less noise. If you have a good receiver that can decode the HD codecs, I honestly believe it makes a difference. The sound has a lot more presence to it and really has helped to open up the sound. My major gripe, which isn't too bad is that menu navigation and pop-up menu navigation is not as fast as the PS3. Slightly sluggish but nothing unbearable. All in all I am happy with my purchase and am definitely looking forward to getting more Blu-rays.

Care to explain how that is possible? It's the same PCM processed by the receiver either way.

There has always been the argument that where it is decoded doesn't matter. I think it does. When I have the player decode it, there is considerably more background noise than when I Bitstream, which definitely detracts from the audio quality. Some processors are better than others and I would think that the processors in the receiver are more capable of audio decoding then are the ones in the player. Just my $0.02.

The player doesn't do any processing in the type of connection you are describing. It merely decodes the track back into PCM and ships it to the receiver for processing. Decoding is not something that is better or worse. It is either correct or incorrect. And, Dolby and DTS will not approve a decoder that is incorrect. The PCM produced by decoding in the player and receiver will be identical if the decoders are working properly.

Now, it is possible that your receiver processes PCM input differently than bitstreamed input. But, that kind of difference would be a receiver issue. Or, perhaps the player's PCM output levels are simply lower than those produced by AVR decoding.

Yes. The levels are definitely different. The receiver dial norms movies when it does the decoding therefore I don't have to turn up my volume as much resulting in less noise and distortion.

Just picked up the new Panasonic DMP-BD605 at Costco tonight. It came with an HDMI cable and was $279.99. Noticed that besides the HDMI out, it has Optical, and analog 2.0. LAN connection on the back. Flip down front panel lower right hand corner (while looking at the front) reveals the SD HC slot. Youtube and Viera Cast ready. I'm in the process of hooking it up now. Will post more once I get all updates / BD-live etc. Had to provide my own SD HC card - no big deal.
