Seems like several ISPs are cooperating with the RIAA in order to stop piracy...I have nothing to hide by any means

This is nothing new on RIAA's part. Years ago, I downloaded a movie that I owned but the DVD had been scratched up. I didn't feel like purchasing it again at the time because it was the middle of the night. The next morning I had a message when I logged in that I had to call my ISP. They told me that the MPAA had notified them that I was downloading something and that I had 2 more strikes before I was black listed. It's a very effective means of stopping P2P, but not piracy. Like everybody else said, it just gets people to go online and find the products in different ways.
I also completely agree with Toefer that there are more reasons then to get something for free to pirate. I'd go so far as to add my reason as well, I'm sure that there are people that previously owned a game/CD that damaged it or lost it, and just download it instead of buying it. Also availability drove piracy before iTunes. Once something was out of print, it was easier to download it then to try to hunt it down at used CD stores. This goes for computer games too. I can't find a copy of say King's Quest 2 in a store, but I can easily find it online for free. |
