I just watched this again last week. Curious to see how the blu looks, since Zsigmond (quoting IMDB) "tried to approximate human vision through the post-production technique of exposing the undeveloped negative to additional pure light, which literally dampens blacks and softens intense colors until they become pastel hues."
I assume, if it's transferred faithfully, some people will complain about how low contrast the film looks, when in fact it's HOW the film's supposed to look. |

Not an Altman fan really but I love Chandler, this film is great too.

I'm not a huge Altman fan either (though to be fair it's been a very long time since I've seen a lot of his stuff) but The Long Goodbye works on just about ever level you can look at.
Chandler's books can be pretty hard to follow and they can make for very confusing films but TLG is pretty tight. Elliott Gould is fantastic. Not only was he a better Marlowe than I would have ever expected, he might be the second-best Marlowe overall. It not only has a very gritty, 70s look but it also has a 70s feel to it that isn't forced or contrived and a result doesn't feel nearly as dated as something like Marlowe or Harper. |

Earlier this year, Potemkine released Melancholia (which I believe was their first Blu-ray release) with forced subs, but that may be down to rights issues. They themselves maintain an English-friendly web shop (where they sell from many labels) and ship internationally:

What are the chances of this getting an official review on the site?
It looks like this release will have forced French subtitles unfortunately. According to potemkine.fr's own information it'll be "Version originale anglaise sous-titrée français & Version française" or "Original English version with French subtitles & French Version". ![]() Still, I'll wait for absolute confirmation! Anyone got this yet? Though I will probably buy it even if it does have forced subs. No certainty that this will be released anywhere else.

well MGM barely has a pulse right now in the US--outside of Bond--so I certainly wouldn't see them releasing this title.
They seemed to be on the right track for a while after they emerged from bankruptcy, but unfortunately they have pretty much disappeared at this point. really makes me mad too; I was really thinking MGM would be releasing a lot more titles at this point. ![]() |

French subs are forced.
AQ is quite good, but some dialog have a harsh shuffle on it, creating an uncomfortable hearing, in about 5 or 6 scenes. It is easy to find, but is not that distubring. PQ however is kind of a mixed bag. Most of the day scenes are wonderful. Nice colors, definition, contrast, blacks are deep, it's clearly HD. But night scenes, my god... You have awful grain uprise, and blacks are completely wahsed out. The 2 combined create an awful look. Moreover, these scenes usually have an disappointing definition. Also, be aware that the copy has most likely not been cleaned, since there are plenty of white speckles throughout. It's kind of a nice upgrade (I read the DVD aws god-awful), but I do believe there was potential for so much more than this, so I felt disappointed at the end. PQ : 7/10 AQ : 7.5/10 |
