PS3 Sound Settings

i am trying to figure out why under the audio setting and having the ability to select many choices hdmi dts hd ma and dolby true hd is not listed under bitsteam or linear.

then i have an integra receiver and playing irobot i dont have the dtshdma icon lit on my receiver.

any reason why?

EDIT-(i think i have it right, somebody please correct me if im wrong) Because their both decoded internally by ps3 in software. there's nothing to check off, it does it by itself.

Did you check PCM 5.1 44khz and 48khz?

I see no point in checking off everything. all anybody ever needs for movies is what i listed. and 7.1.

You will NOT see the icons on your receiver. The PS3 internally decodes them and sends them to the receiver (you need to be in linear NOT bitstream). This has been answer thousands of times on the forum, more recently here:

Press the Select button on the PS3 controller (or remote) while you're watching a movie to see the status on what codecs the PS3 is using. At the receiver level, it will always just see the decoded linear PCM.

It's pretty useless and redundant for receivers to implement these HD codecs. Extra cost for functions you'll never need because they're supposed to be implemented in the players.

Correct.

Except that for CD playback, checking the other higher sampling frequencies is good as the PS3 does some pretty goo upsampling of audio CDs. If your receiver can handle it, check those boxes. Also for those with the original SACD PS3, you need to enable the higher sampling frequencies to hear the extra detail in your SACDs.

If I only check these 2 settings on my ps3 it doesnt sound as good, and I have to turn my recever up a lot more to hear it. But If I check dolby digital and the DTS it sounds a lot better and dont need to turn it up near as much, the highs are much clearer especially, am I missing something?

Linear means the audio is decoded internally. Bitstream means the audio stream is sent to the A/V receiver to be decoded.

I dont know why that is. those are just the lossy codecs, but yeah you should have them checked anyway. are you getting dts-ma and TrueHD?

How do i know if i am? If i hit select on my remote it says dolby digital, also i didnt think about this how do I check if it's bitstream or linear? Also I am using a digital optical cable for the audio because i just upgraded my system from my logitech which used the optical cable to my new system. The new system is klipsch rf 62 with harmon kardon avr340 receiver. I have this reciever because i traded my used car straight accros for the system, I will upgrade to a different receiver in the coming months.

With an optical cable all you can get are lossy codecs like Dolby Digital and DTS. You need to run your audio to the receiver through an HDMI cable to get the lossless audio formats. When you connect with an HDMI cable, go into the settings menu on the PS3, and into the audio setup and select HDMI and let it do the auto setup. I don't remember if you'll have to select linear (PCM) or if it does it automatically. Either way it's simple to do. Then when you're watching a blu-ray and hit select, it should say DTS HD MA or Dolby True HD. There are some discs out there though where the default audio isn't the lossless audio, so when you start those movies you have to go into the pop-up menu and select the appropriate audio.

If your PS3 is connected to your receiver, it won't matter whether you've selected linear or bitstream. The receiver will need to be on either way to hear audio.

+1. For the highest fidelity SACD and CD playback, I have to check them all for playback via HDMI.
