Default is it worth it

is it worth replacing a 30" philips tube that shows a 1080i picture for a 32" samsung lcd with a contrast ratio of 8000:1 that can only show a 720p will there be any pq improvement p.s. the tube is a couple of years old and uses a 2d comb filter i can not find the native resolution i dont think its 1080

NO!!

If you where looking at 36"+ tv then yes, the size diffrence of the two is soo little. & going from a CRT that can product real blacks to something that only makes dark greys is just downgrading.

If I were upgrading I'd want something more substantial than a 32" 720p...but we all have our budgets.

CRT fanatic.

CRT = Outdated technology, Why do LCD's dominate the market (You see tons of LCD screens at stores, all the CRTs are in limite quanity in a small corner, waiting to become extinct)? because LCD better .

LCDs look great if you get the right one, and if you optimize them correctly. A CRT will look like crap too if you got color, hue, brightness all wacked out. Unfortunately the out of the box settings for most LCD TVs are wacked. It takes only 15 mins to get the blacker than black signals to look correctly via brigthness and contrast settings. Sharpness also make picture look cleaner if set properly, too high it will be to harsh, too low it will be too blurry. Even adjusting Back light can help picture quality.

Oh yes, 720p LCD TVs do support 1080i signals, they are outputted at 1920x540. Leave your output to 1080i for Blu-ray, it just looks cleaner and sharper than downscaling to 720p. As for Broadcasted HDTV, the bitrate is too low to tell diffrence between 720p and 1080i.
