The Panny you want in a 50" for $15 (yes 15) more.

I'd skip the Toshiba.

And move closer. 12 feet is really far. 12 feet is about the recommended viewing distance for about a 100" screen...

You should be able to find a 54 or 58 inch Panny for close to 1000. look around on amazon more.

See?

According to whom?

The most I've seen is multiplying your display size by 2.5, which would put the max ideal distance for a 55" display at 11.5-ish feet.

It's 1.5 times for best results... First however.

This has been discussed many times before. I've even seen this posted many times http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.html and another link with the same info (for further proof) http://hd.engadget.com/2006/12/09/10...o-screen-size/

A screen to distance calculator http://myhometheater.homestead.com/v...alculator.html and another http://www.av-products.com/ScreenCalculator.htm

As you can see in the graphs the benefits of 1080p start to become visible for a 50" at just under 10 feet, with the full effect at 6'3" (6 feet 3 inch's is 1.5 times 50"). At 12 feet, benefits of 720p start to become visible.

2.5 times the screen distance is about as far as you should sit for 1080, but not ideal. It's more of a compromise for average consumers because not every room is able to be set up for proper viewing distances.

However, the users eye sight factors in of course. This all is if the viewer has 20/20 vision (corrected by glasses or naturally). If the user doesn't have 20/20 eye sight then the user would have to sit closer. For example my father has poor eye sight even with glasses and sits closer. Similarly if the user has better than 20/20 eye sight, then they could sit further away.

And even though 6' 3" is where the full effect of 1080P starts to become noticeable, one can sit closer if they want, as long as they don't notice unwanted side effects like the "screen door effect" and the such, and as long as it's comfortable for the viewer.
