You would hear sound, but none of the HD sound formats. I think you could do better for around the same money, like the Sony 720 receiver, and some cheap speakers you could upgrade later.

How much money do you have to spend and how much can you realistically save in a short period of time?

i have 500$ to spend and icant save money lol

I would then recommend getting a 2-channel amp and 2 speakers. If you're able to "borrow" some speakers (maybe a friend has some laying about doing nothing), then I'd get an A/V Receiver. You should be able to get a decent one for $500.

Look at the Polk HTIB system in my sig. Also, look at this for a receiver. Get your cables at Monoprice (link in sig).

Yes, you will want to run HDMI from PS3 to Reciever, HDMI reciever to TV, you will have surround sound.
