One thing I hate about widescreen is that there is no consistency - and I understand that (the way the movie was shot, etc). But how do you plasma owners deal with this? I am thinking about replacing my TV (LCD) with a pioneer plasma. Has anyone experienced burn-in due to the constant presence of these black bars? Any concern, or do you use a zoom mode?
(16:9 is a dumb ratio to be generally acknowledged as "standard") |

Excellent news, guys, thanks. Is the picture REALLY that much better than LCD displays?? (I had posted another thread regarding picture quality). Maybe I'll be converted; was never really sold on plasma's. Will let you know.

I have two LCDs... a Samsung, and a sharp Aquos.... I've seen many plasmas... and if I ever need another normal T.V..... it'll be a Plasma... I just can't stand the lackluster black levels of my LCDs

A plasma is basically a Fixed Pixel CRT, and have the same benefits and problems as CRTs. The phosphors that emit light are what can produce a true black, also can lead to image retention (Not to be mistaken by "Burn in", which is permanent and you DON'T want that) if you leave an image, logo, or black bar for too long on screen. People have owned CRT for years, did not see much of Burn in because most of what they watch is full screen, if you have not had that problem, you shouldn't worry about that in a plasma. Plasma manufacturers have used pixel shift features to prevent image retention, which is very useful if you watch alot of content that has Logos or black bars on their, but if it affects picture quality (which it shouldn't in most models) turn it off. Being a DLP owner, I have wished they match the black levels of CRTs or some plasmas, although I appreciate the very accurate color, and high resolution, although by now plasmas with 1080p resolution is commonplace.

Same here black bars on movies and no problems. Don't use zoom unless it's for standard def tv. As for Blu-rays and DVDs I just watch them as they were intended and the Pioneer plasma 111fd handles it perfectly.
