Would picture-in-picture require additional read speed/data rate?

Generally it works like this. BD's read bandwith is about 40/44Mbps (that's Megabits per second) with about 10Mbps for audio and the rest. Most movies would ONLY use this full bandwith for a few seconds only, if at all. PiP on BD is mandated to be a minimum of 480p and a maximum of 1080p. In contrast, PiP on HD-DVD is maximum 480p30. PiP doesn't have to be all throughout the movie as well, as you can see/read from IME's implementation on HD-DVD. Some scenes may not have it while for some movies, PiP is used for a running video commentary (M:I-3). In short, including PiP does take up bandwith. So instead of 40Mbps for one video stream, the primary (feature-film) stream may max out to 30-35Mbps while the secondary takes out the rest. It all depends on how the PiP is implemented and what scenes the PiP is involved in. fuad |
