I'm surprised n one is talking about this! I saw it last night, and it's easily the best movie of the year so far. Don't be fooled by the trailers, it's not the comedy it's made out to be. It's very much an emotionally driven drama as it is a comedy. The cast was phenomenal. Kristen Stewart isn't just "twilight girl" anymore. This and Speak prove that she can honestly act, and she's pretty damn good in this movie. Ryan Reynolds character is very intriguing and after the movie my film class has been charged on writing a paper on his characters actions. Martin Starr is a great supporting actor and Jesse Eisenberg has a big career ahead of him after this. And the 80's vibe was awesome. Go see it and support the movie!

An Honest Review from a film fan:
Good, but not great. The film was good mostly just because the characters are easy to relate to in the fact that the story is simply laden with relatable content. Even with pot thrown into the mix almost pointlessly as it serves no purpose to the story or the characters except for to produce a few giggles at most, the story isw simply good enough to relate to. This shouldn't be a surprise as from what I've heard, it's based on real life. In terms of realism, it's probably the director's best effort to date. However, and this is a BIG however... ...the acting was simply terrible. The only thing that made this film 1987 was the music, the cars, and...well, that's about it. Nod to Ryan Reynolds for actually knowing how people acted in the 80's, but the rest of the actors must be too young to remember, because the kid who plays the main character is about the most uncharismatic actor I've ever seen in my entire life. This wouldn't be a problem if the character role didn't call for charisma in so many different places. Another problem is that his lines always seem incredibly forced, and he talks like he's delivering legal information on a radio commercial. Who the hell is this kid and why did they give him the star role? Fail. Kristen Stewart was probably the real saving grace for the entire film as she amazingly enough drives the whole story and every character in it with her pretty amazing performance. Given the people she was working with, one could call it a miracle. She pulled off the cute shy oddball character better than I expected, to be honest. As I said, the film was easy to relate to in that most people know what it's like to get screwed over in life, or to have to go looking for a job to find the only one available is that pathetic job everyone else laughs about. You're not going to be able to quite predict everything that happens in the film, though, as the realism is so thorough that the ever expected convenient turn of events never seems to come the way you expect it in this kind of film. In the end, this movie is probably best for dates, as it delivers a few laughs in a romantic dramedy that is enjoyable, but simply does not have the acting power or directorial flair that would make it an instant classic. There, those are my thoughts. :P |

And it's not like there has been that much competition this year for good movies. |
