Default Denon Expert's

Can someone explain in simple term's what the model number means?

Such as a AVR-1709 or an AVR 1508 and maybe an AVR2309 and AVR3808.

I'm not asking about the listed ones, just using them as example's. I am guessing that the last number(or last two) is the model year, but what category to place the first two number in.

I wanted to get an Onkyo 606 for the bedroom, but I’m thinking about having something different with variety in my life.

Default Denon model numbers

The higher the first two digits are, the higher up the model is in the product line, representing more features, functions, and price point. Check Denon's website for specifications for each model. Denon.com

I guess I thought that the first two numbers meant more then just a higher model number. Kinda thought it has something more to do with the features. I guess the way I'm thinking, something like a car amp where if you look at the number you will know how many channel's and what year it came out just by the model number.

If the number means a higher model number and more features, I wonder why they have a model number lower such as the AVR-989 compared to a higher number model number like the AVR-1609 which is much cheaper.

The AVR-1609 has the high model and lower price, while the AVR-989 is a low model but cost much more.

I guess I'm thinking too much into this and also making convo in the forum.

It gets complicated by the fact that the same unit will be sold using two different models numbers - a three digital number in some stores and a four digital number in others. The 887 and 2307 were pretty much the same receiver, just sold in different places.

That is strange, because I was looking at that and wondering WTF? lol

The last digit is the year, obviously.

The 1909 2309 2809 are found at high end electronics stores and the 789 889 and 989 are sold at big box stores like futureshop and best buy.

the 789 889 989 are identical in every way of the higher end models the 1909, 2309 and 2809 except for the build quality the lower model numbers have a plastic front where the 1909 and up have metal.

I would go with the 3808 you can upgrade the firmware via internet and will be good for many more years than the lower models, this is why Denon did not release new models 3808 and up.

As Twitch stated, some sku's are for distribution channels/big box stores etc. And the upper end for higher end or direct dealers, just make sure you purchase from an authorised dealer for warranty.

The 989 is basically the same as the 2809 w/o the remote for the second zone and probably no RS-232 connector on the back. The 1609 is much farther down the food chain than the 989 so that is why it costs less. The four digit models are typically in high-end stores and the three digit models are in places like Circuit City (...gone now so I don't know where).

You are right about the 789, 889, 989 being for big box store, but Best Buy/Magnolia carries the 2309, 2809 versions. Those are also capable of carrying the CI at the end of the model which stands for custom installation. Installers have the ability to do more with the install and setup of these units.

Yeah, that's what the RS-232 connection is for, not much else. You can hook up a computer to it via serial port and then customize it. But most of that stuff is available through the menu system anyway. For those of us who will not pay somebody to plug in our equipment, it doesn't offer much for the extra cost. I found this out while researching receivers a few weeks back.

I am quite pleased with the audio performance of my 889, especailly now that I finally got my 7.1 system hooked up by running all new speaker wire and installing what used to be my fronts as surrounds.

The last two digit designation, i.e. 07, 08, 09 are the product year of manufacture.

Wanted to say thanks to everyone's input on the subject.

I decided and ordered the Denon AVR-789.

I wasn't trying to blow up the bedroom, just upgrade from a HTiB. I believe anything above an AVR-2309 was just too much for may small bedroom.

I definitely didn't want to pay that much for a 2309, so I went a few steps lower.

I don't watch enough movies in the bedroom anyway to justify anything higher. Actually I was satisfied with the HTiB, because the small amount of viewing time.

I don't even have a bluray player in my bedroom, but since I will be adding one I decided to upgrade the sound also.

I will more then likely buy a package speaker set. I was thinking of either the Polk 6750 or Klipsch Quintet III’s.

Well things have changed..

I ordered the AVR-789, but when I look at my order it was in pending for 2 days.
I called and I was told they are not in like the website stated 'In Stock'...

I was given a few offers and idea's and it's so funny how some company's will not budge on the price until they KNOW that you are about to buy from someone else.

Since they did not have what I wanted in stock, I asked about the Denon 2308 and was told I had to pay more. I asked nicely if we could split the difference in half and was told "No".

I huge up and searched the net and came across another site that had it for $100 less. I called them back to cancel my order, of course he wanted to say the other company wasn't an authorized dealer; and it is.

He looked and looked to see what the difference between his company and the other to make some type of sales point; only to find the other company only has a 90 day where his company has 1 year warranty.

Bottom line to this, I got it for $100 less and they could have gotten me for $110 more then what I am paying now.

I was looking for something entry level and close to the Onkyo 606 and I think the AVR-789 was it.

It seems as if the 2308 maybe close to the 705/706 and I got it cheaper then expected.

Denon AVR-2308 it is.

By the way, am I off in comparison of the two?

The 2308 is last year's model.

You can print out the spec's or the manual and compare them side by side:

Denon AVR-2308ci

Denon AVR-2309ci

Make sure it's an authorized Denon retail site or your warranty will be void, Denon is very strict with this.

I know it's an older model and I wasn't about to pay the new model price.

It is an authorized Online Denon dealer, the guy thought the other place that was cheaper was not a authorized dealer..

I realized I was have to get the Sony S-550 instead of the S-350 now

The 2308 does not decode the HD audio codecs. This is not a problem if your BDP does and has 7.1 analog output. Another thing is that it only has 2 HDMI inputs whereas the 2309 has 4. But if you are like me, then you only need 2 HDMI inputs anyway.

Only if the BDP has 7.1 analog output.... hummm
I'm not sure I want the Sony 550 over the Sony 350....
I am thinking about calling them back and just waiting on the 789..

Which BDP are you using for the analog output?

I have the one in my sig. It does both HDMI and decodes the HD codecs for analog output to the receiver. I can hook it up either way. It is my understanding that only the 550 decodes the HD codecs and has 7.1 analog output but I could be wrong.

Use code AFLAUD25 (courtesy first to crackinhedz, then retailmenot.com and fatwallet.com)

I don't know what your budget is, though.
