Default Do I need a new Blu-ray Player

I have an old Sony bdp-s300, It's been updated with the latest firmware 5.30
But I bought Avatar expecting to be blown away and I wasn't. The Tv I'm watching it on is an Samsung 46" lcd 1080p with 120hz. So my question is are these new players much better than my older Sony and do I need to purchase a new one or am I just expecting to much? Any Thoughts!

The first thing I want to ask is do you have motion flow on. The second thing I want to ask is is it calibrated.

Motion flow is on, and yes the tv has been calibrated.

LOL, well people do sleep and work. Unfortunately I can't really help since I'm not a Sony fan. None of my equipment is Sony. I'm also becoming less of a Samsung fan day by day. I am moving my last Samsung component out of my HT and into my bedroom today (replacing a Samsing BD-P1600 with a Pioneer BDP-320).

I do really like Samsung monitors for computers, if that's any consolation. :-0

The upconversion of avatar DVD caught me by surprise. The Pioneer BDP-320 has amazing PQ though. Not sure on your unit, sorry. Try out another blu-ray like TDK, Star Trek, or something else that has gotten amazing reviews and see what you think imo.

I can honestly say I don't recall ever reading a review of any blu ray player where the reviewer said there was a noticable improvement to the picture quality of a blu ray movie. They always seem to say the same thing to me and that is... blu ray playback is pretty much the same on all units, the difference in picutre quality on players is really only seen when upconverting dvd's and that is where you would see the benifit.

Now I only own an Oppo 83BDP and PS3 personally so I've only done comparisons personally with those two units and I could never tell the difference between the two when playing blu rays... when playing dvd's, I actually do have my eyes convinced that the Oppo does a better a job, but that may just be because I want to convince myself I did the right thing by buying it

I think the best thing you could do, is go to a store with a liberal return policy, best buy, or what have you, get them to confirm upfront that they will take give you a full refund no questions asked, bring that player home, hook it up and see for yourself if you see a difference.

If you don't do the comparision yourself and leave it to the opnions of people on a message board you are only setting yourself up for disappointment.

All IMHO naturally

Switch between the DVD and the BD and you'll see the obvious superiority of the BD.

I couldnt agree more with SellmeyourDVD. No you dont need a new BD. Unless you want to purchase the $1499 SONY Blu Ray player or the $4500 Denon BD player.

My first question would be -

Can you identify a HD broadcast?

From personal experience those who cannot see what the fuss is about is actually the problem itself. Most women I know have to be told its HD, they don't automatically spot that its sharper, clearer and more defined. Even when they are told its HD, they just say "oh". If you fit into that category then just be pleased to know that you have the best, but can't tell the difference.

I fail to believe your TV is properly calibrated. Anyone who goes that far to enhance their visual experience would have a clue whats wrong in the first place. I've never had any TV calibrated and I can see the difference between SD and HD when i'm drunk.
