I know that high definition is standard free, there is no such thing as NTSC or PAL HD. And I know Blu Ray players are backwards compatible. Are they backwards compatible with eitehr standard.
I am aware of the region coding but I have art DVDs that are PAL regions free. Right now I play these discs on my computer instead of my standard definition DVD player. In this situation the region is inconsequential and if the Blu Ray player will play PAL and NTSC, like my computer, then it makes my decision to by a new Blu Ray deck easier. |

If you have region-free DVD's, you do not need a 'multi-region' BD-player and you would be able to play them on BD-players from every region, BUT, if you have both PAL-format and NTSC-format DVD's (or BD's with extra's in PAL and/or NTSC), you DO need a 'multi-format' BD-player.
If you live in Europe, most BD-players not only play PAL, but NTSC as well. If you happen to live in North America however, most BD-players are NTSC-capable only! Even players from the same brand (like Panasonic) are PAL&NTSC on their EU-models, but NTSC-only on their US-models (I tried to explain why in an older thread like this). In the case you live in N.A., you would either need to 1) find a PAL-capable BD-player (plus a PAL-capable display), 2) find a BD-player that transforms PAL into a special NTSC-50Hz signal (plus a display that accepts this signal), 3) buy a player online from outside-N.A. (plus PAL-capable display), or 4) buy a modified player (plus either a PAL-capable, or NTSC-50Hz capable display). Anyway, good luck! |
