Default I'm a PC and I want Blu-ray!

Thought y'all would find this entertaining...

From TheBluBlog. Go there to find watch the ad...

...The most recent version of Microsoft’s “Laptop Hunters” ad campaign is above. It features an 11-year-old and his mom fawning over a Sony laptop that has Blu-ray.

Hmmmm. Why does this strike us as odd coming from Microsoft? Oh, yeah. They have fought the format every step of the way. Here’s one take on the ad:

"I find it somewhat ironic that one of the things Microsoft decides to tout in its latest commercial which supposedly demonstrates that PC’s are cheaper than macs is Blu-Ray. Fair enough, you can get Blu-Ray drives on several manufacturer’s PC’s and it’s a shame Apple has yet to embrace the format, but that’s besides the point. The hypocritical part is that Microsoft has been a huge detractor of blu-ray in its console battle with Sony and the PS3

"The company had originally backed the rival HD-DVD format, and even after HD-DVD’s demise they still won’t add support to blu-ray on the xbox 360 claiming that blu-ray is not going to succeed and the future is in movie downloads. It’s ironic then that they have no problems singing it’s virtue as a feature lacking from Macs."

All this said, Blu-ray backers and consumers everywhere are excited that Microsoft appears to be willing to change its tune on the format. It just may have taken the excitement of an 11-year-old to get the tech giant there.

Default CNET Crave's take

Is Microsoft finally embracing Blu-ray?

Maybe you noticed already, but in the latest installment of Microsoft's "Laptop Hunters" ad campaign, 11-year-old Jackson and his mother, Lisa, pick a 16-inch Sony Vaio notebook that's game-friendly and has something no Apple MacBook is offering: Blu-ray. When mother and son learn the Sony laptop has the feature, they practically give each other high fives, exclaiming in unison, "Blu-ray!"

I know this doesn't sound like a big deal--but it kind of is. For Microsoft, which was one of HD DVD's main supporters and fought Blu-ray tooth and nail till the bitter end, using Blu-ray (and, ironically, a Sony laptop) as a selling point in an ad is a sign that perhaps it's finally ready to bury the hatchet.

Somehow, I doubt this means we'll see Blu-ray in the XBox 360 anytime soon, but I'm sure a few folks out there wouldn't mind if Microsoft did offer a premium version of the 360 with a Blu-ray player for $100 more.

And heck, for the price of a MacBook Pro, it'd be nice if Apple also threw in a Blu-ray drive, no?

I think the key point here is that it's a SONY notebook the Mom is fawning over.

Sony being one of the founding members of Blu-ray, may have a little weight to throw around when Microsoft askes them to use on of their laptops in a Microsoft ad.

Just a thought.

I just saw that commercial recently and was surprised it mentioned blu-ray. I was really happy to see that it did though.

I'm a Microsoft type guy and I have had BD in my system for quite a while. All of my builds have BD in them. Microsoft may not put it in the 360 but they are more than cooperative when it comes to PC's (and not just Sony PC's). Microsoft doesn't really care - as long as they sell product. They are doing more for BD than Apple ever did

Hi prerich!

I'm a PC and I have two(2) VAIO laptops with Blu-ray support.
1 is the original BD laptop(June 2006) VGN-AR190G and the other is a less expensive 2008 Model Year VGN-AR730E/B.

Go Microsoft!
Go Sony!
Go Blu-ray!
