In the last few weeks my PS3 has been freezing up while watching BDs...first happened when watching Donnie Brasco a few weeks ago. Everytime I popped the disc out and put it back in it said "This is an invalid disc". So I thought it may be that disc so I tried The Departed (which I watched straight through with no problem when I got it) and it also said invalid disc. I tried Donnie Brasco again the next day and and watched Revenge after it and then there was no problem. Now I'm watching The Fountain and it just keeps freezing. I've been powering down the ps3 and inserting the disc again and even if it does play it won't make it 10 minutes. First time I played it, it froze about 13 min into it. Tried again today and it froze for the first time at 30 min. Other discs won't play either if I try them once the freezing begins on any other disc. I've also never had any issues playing games on it, those never seem to freeze up. This was also happening before I updated to 1.8 so it wasn't that update. The unit doesn't seem any hotter than it usually does but I keep thinking it might be a heat issue. Not sure what else it could be that's causing it, anyone have any ideas?

Thought dust might be an issue but I try to keep it cleaned off and the discs are clean. I have the ps3 standing vertically so you think too much dust may be getting in it that side vent? Would I be better off putting it in the horizontal position??

Same thing happened to me and the system was broken.
![]() Call Sony and open a ticket. They will tell you how to reinitialize the system. If that fails you will need to send it in to them for a replacement system. If you do not have the receipt they will charge you for replacement of the unit. Be prepared to lie if necessary when they ask for that piece of paper. I didn't and was stuck paying (which is why I abhor Sony). G/L |

There were problems with freezing and the wireless network. The workaround was simply to turn off networking while watching a Blu-Ray - worked for me and many others. Since I switched to ethernet, I haven't had the problem at all (although 1.80 may have fixed this anyway - not sure).

Thanks for the input guys. I'll have to play around with it more tomorrow and see if it keeps happening. It's very inconsistent though but if it happens tomorrow I'm calling Sony. I kept all the receipts and everything cause I never trusted it work through the year. Or maybe the f*cker is mad at me for not paying it much attention lately!

It sucks when you are showing off your system to the neighbors and the movie is freezing. That is exactly what happened to me.
My BD movies are immaculate, I think it's the PS3 getting glitchy. Apparently, using a game system as a movie player is probably not a great idea. You could shorten the life of a PS2 to less than a year if you used it as your primary DVD player. |

I used my Euro-launch PS2 as my primary DVD player for over a year and it's still working today over 6 years later. That's with heavy gaming use throughout and moderate DVD playing for the first approx 18 months.
Plenty of people here are real enthusiasts using the PS3 as their primary player and haven't suffered these problems, let's not jump to conclusions. ![]() |

Nothing has worked to fix this...restored system, turned 24p off, disconnected network. From the time I turn it on I have 30 min and then it freezes...nothing wrong with the the discs, no scratches or dust and it doesn't on every disc on I have now. It was fine since I had it but something is screwed on this thing now, waiting for a return box to be sent to me from Sony
