Germany Sony BDP-S550 or Playstation 3?

Hi Folk,
whats the better solution for bluray playback, the S550 or the PS3?
I have an 46" Samsung (24p) LCD-TV which plays also the audio, no extra boxes for now.. maybe a 2.1 Set sometimes.

Pro's for the S550 is the IR which is perfect with my Harmony One Remote.. the PS3 needs an adapter (that doesnt exist for now)

And which of these 2 Players have the better DVD Upscaling Features?

Hope you can help me and sorry for my poor english...

greetings
Daniel

Personally, for the money I think you would be much better off getting a PS3. It's an excellent device for all things multimedia.

Take a look through this review and I'm sure you'll come to a decision that will suit you.

I have both, and to me the upscale seems to be the same, the only reason I got the 550 was more of a traditional audio look.

But the PS3 has a lot more features then the 550, like copy movies and cd,s and pictures to the drive for instant playback.

If your receiver doesn't decode lossless, but has multichannel inputs then the S550 is the way to go.

Indeed I am having almost the same question. However I am considering the S350 since I do not see any major advantages of the S550 Vs the S350 (I do not need the analog audio outputs).

So, my question goes in the same path...what about the digital audio output: do you know if the PS3 output sound (that goes to a surround system for example) is as good as the one provided by the S350/S550 ?
thanks

Look at the upscale again. I also had both and to me the S550 does a much better job.

If you are not into the above listed things and are just looking to watch movies I would go with the S550 or (S350 if you don't need the analog outs). Also it in nice to be able to use one universal remote for the whole system.

The legacy codecs sound great through optical, but you will not get lossless audio through this connection.

Greetings,

I have a PS3 80g w/sacd and just replaced it with a stand alone blu-ray player and a stand alone sacd/cd player..

i tried the 350 at home and the video was pretty much the same between the PS3 and the 350.(blu-ray and upconversion of sd)..

I then tried a panasonic BMP-BD35 and that is the one i got.(same price as the 350) It has a far better picture on upconversion of sd and slightly better than the PS3 and 350 on blu-ray.....All 3 players were used to calibrate with DVE HDBasics, a spider3 sensor and calman software. Equal playing field

I realize that you didn't ask about the panasonic but i though i would add it for you as a possible option..

Just get a PS3, you'll be happy. I went to PS3 after standalone. And I'll never go back.

If you are going to get an S550, better do it fast. It's being discontinued and replaced by the S560.

I didn't go with the PS3 because I needed the analog outputs and don't play games. And as I recall, the S350 doesn't decode DTS-MA. So if your AVR doesn't decode it, you'll want the S550.

hmm i dont play any games and i have an HTPC on the LCD-TV to. So i dont need to copy any stuff to a harddisk.
I just want to play BluRay & DVDs on this "player".

In the store i work, we have a Panasonic BMP-BD35 Palyer.. and i have the feeling that the BluRay's stuck a little Bit.. its like looking an 24fps Movie on an 60Hz LCD-TV who dont have 24p Playback.. hmm but in the manual of the LCD-TV stands "support 1080p 24Hz". So I'm a little but confused.. the DVDs looks great on the TV.. maybe i take teh BD35 Player and take it to my friend who has a PS3 and make a Test there.

hard hard discision

I read somewhere here on blu-ray.com, that all players are equal, just like the HDMI cables. They all are sending a digital signal so it is the same as far as picture quality. I would worry more about brand performance but the ps3 and the panasonic are both good brands

OK I will go this weekend for the PS3.
I do not play games (welll never say never...) but the 80G hard drive will allow me to have a "video store" without carring around DVDs...This can really be a good feacture, tacking into consideration, as most of you have sayed, the image from a PS3 otr S350 is "the same".
thanks
