Default The Uberbot Home Theater 2009 Upgrade Thread!

2009 will be a slim year for upgrades compared to 2008 but I hope to have the help of the pros on the forum to help me make the right decisions on how to wisely spend what little money is left after the 08 economy. Just to recap some of my current setup as of the first of the year:

Sony 52XBR4 / Onkyo TX-SR805 with BXT Cooling fan / 4 x LSi9 Polks / LSiC Polk Center / 2 x f/xi3 Polk Rear / Dual JBL PSW-1000 Subs / Panamax M5300-PM / Tivo Series 3 / PS3 upgraded to 500GB WD Scorpio Blue / 360 / Wii

And some photos, old and new:

Bluray:

HDTV:

Gaming:

More images available in my HT gallery.

Thanks for the compliments. My house, more than ever, has been escapism from the stresses of the real world. Some people smoke and drink - I HT!!

I picked up my first power conditioner, the Panamax M5300-PM, and got everything hooked up. There was a very noticeable difference in audio quality as it appears I had some interference. Video quality will require some attention before I make a solid opinion. It's a pretty sexy unit.

I really dig subtle blue lighting in home theaters. Lighting is tough for me since my theater is in a loft. I picked up the Ikea DIODER to test out behind the TV but the TV is too far from the wall and the light was barely noticeable. I was going to return them ($40 for 4 little lights seems a bit much) but the blue on the Panamax has inspired me to play a bit more.

I am thinking of either mounting all four in the TV stand or 2 above each side of the center channel and 1 behind each speaker. I am worried that putting them behind speakers might be useless. I have a light behind the TV that will most probably cancel out the blue LED lights.

I'll play around with it tonight and post pictures of what I decided. I really hate trying to hide wires.

The LSi bookshelves should be more than capable considering he is running dual subs...

Nice setup!

I really love your set-up and you have good taste in equipment selection as well as art selection. Where did you get your Panamax 5300? I want one too!

I love the LSi9 series. They are a perfect combo with the Onkyo and Bluray. However, I listen to a lot of music and, I have to admit I have been thinking about a front speaker upgrade. I am a retired musician and my ears are spoiled by high end reference monitors. I'm going to start listening and planning. If I upgrade, my front LSi9s will replace the rear f/xi3. I was thinking about mounting the LSi9s to the ceiling above the loft wall.

My first step in sampling new speakers will be the Paradigm Studio 100 V4. The price isn't terribly outrageous and the reviews seem to be very positive.

Thanks! I am an art and design junkie and tend to upgrade the art more than my equipment!

I picked the 5300 up on Amazon for $330 from a great seller and authorized dealer, laropy. He upgraded me to two day shipping and has stayed in contact with me chatting about how to improve my setup. Highly recommended equipment and seller!

VERY nice setup! I was looking into some lsi9s myself. Are you able to drive them satisfactorily with that Onkyo? I've heard they need a lot of juice to sound good. I have an Onkyo 705 now, but it looks like I'll have to upgrade to a receiver that's 4 Ohms stable and more powerful before upgrading to the 9s...

I watch movies extremely loud and my HT is in a big open space. Given that, I have never felt that the speakers lack power. I think most people would agree that the 805 is a very hard worker. You won't be disappointed with the Lsi9s.

that was my concern, the tiny bookshelves speakers, gotta open up the sound field more, its so worth it if your a music fan....let alone when you blast it,it really pushes them...

hehe,i laugh to myself sometimes on here with married couples & Her story of the speakers being "too big"....

i'm such a fan of music and movies myself,i couldn't ever agree a speaker gets too big.

Hmmm, I think some of the bigger speakers can be ugly... May be it I am gay, but I like my environment nice on the eyes. Now I seen some nice large speakers that are made out of wood and blend in with the furniture. Those are pretty, since I could pass it as the the furniture.

Nice use of your space, and excellent choice of equipment. I really love the three vertical b&w comic panels. Those are wicked freakin' cool!

I agree. You don't need monster speakers to achieve booming reference quality sound. I prefer tower speakers that have roughly the same footprint as the stands my Polks are on. Any larger than that would be a distraction to the flow of the room. These are all important elements in creating a comfortable room.

I love your HT and have looked at it a couple times in the Gallery section of the site. I love the artwork and color schemes. It's an inspiration to anyone looking to customize a room to their preferences. I think you should get a more comfortable couch.
