Default AppStore for PS3?

Over the previous months my personal list of things I wished were added to PS3 grew pretty thin - most of the stuff I wanted is already available.

The only major item I have left is this - AppStore (OK, call it differently, but you got the picture). In addition to games, movies and possibly music (I saw Shin-Ra launched that thread about selling music via PSN), wouldn;t it be nice to have other applications available? Initially developed by Sony and major partners, later possibly by a wider software community? Think of different types of applications you could install on your PS3 - perhaps some advanced media streaming and media organizer applications, DVR tools, home security / smart home type of utilities, photo / video editing, etc, etc, etc. Do you think there is any chance this will happen?

Wait, I thought I read something about a service being developed in Europe to use the PS3 as a DVR. I can't remember the whole article but it was something to that effect.

Maybe you are thinking of this to be on the PSP?

The AppStore, I think, is the best idea for PS3 I've heard in a long time. I think something like that could cement it as the ultimate home entertainment centerpiece and make it the iPhone of the home electronics world. Assuming they market it correctly (like how Apple does its i- product line), it could be huge for PlayStation® brand products for generations to come.

Playstation Store is weak. They rarely have anything I would buy. Their selection of HD movies is particularly lame. I wouldn't spend $5.99 to "rent" an HD title I can only view once when I can buy the Blu-ray for a few dollars more (heh heh). I do enjoy downloading PS3 demo games so I can try them out to see if they are worth buying and I've purchased a few add-on packs for some games but other than that it's all fluff. iTunes has a better selection of media.

The PS3 could really use a homebrew environment like XNA on the Xbox. Sony could either give us a Java runtime or do a custom runtime that we could write programs for.

I'm really suprised this thread didn't take off in this forum. Numbers out today show Apple inc. kicking butt during the recession by selling Iphones and Ipods because they are slick, cool and offer tons of applications. People like options!

The PS3 is easily as slick and cool as anything Apple puts out, and its technology is, without question, top notch. However, the PS3 falters in precisely the way Apple succeeds with their devices. Sony numbers aren't looking too hot right now as a result.

I'm on board 100% with the idea of an application store for the PS3.

There is a difference between a portable device having apps than a console sitting at home. For example if it were sales for apps on an iMac or something.

Now if this were for the PSP, then we'd be talking more about this topic....but its not.

Ugh, please, no.

I find AppStores are more made for handheld devices.

I'm confused by this response. Wouldn't applications for an iMac be called software? I am fairly certain Apple is well covered there - as is the PC.

I also get the idea of apps for a portable device, as availabilty of sofware is limited.

What I don't get is why so many folks are entirely satisfied with the limited number of applications available for the PS3, yet they spend endless hours on this forum decrying sales figures, especially in relation to other consoles. The PS3 hardware is capable of much more than games and bluray playback. Perhaps it is a limited vision for the system that reduces its market share.

Its still a horrible idea as people use the PS3 as either a BD Player or Gaming Console. Whats the point of doing something on your PS3 if you can do it on your PC/iMac next to you? It makes more sense to make it for a portable system as it gives you more things at your fingertips.

I think it'll have a lot more success on the PSP than PS3.

"Ugh, please, no." Geez. You'd think I'd asked you to date my ugly sister. Care to explain/qualify your blanket revulsion of such a simple suggestion?

Maybe I don't want to have them both on at the same time, or maybe I'd rather do something quick on my PS3, since my TV is a lot bigger than my monitor.

I don't see how apps can hurt the PS3.
