Unhappy TX-SR805 Funny Smell?? No Sound

I got an Onkyo 805 today for free. Turns on....switches inputs just fine and I get a picture but no sound? Smells, too, like something has burned? I took the cover off and the smell is coming from the power supply. I'm wondering if that is the problem? And if so where can I get a PS? From Onkyo I'd imagine? Or is it (the rcvr) shot? I got it for free and if it's cheap enough I'd like to fix it to replace my Denon 2307. Or is that not a good idea, too?

You could try a third party repair shop since you don't have the warranty.

They do run hot. I would recommend what Audiophile said above. At least it was free.....geez.

Yeah...free is nice...Especially if it only cost you a couple hundred to fix what seems to be a perfectly running 805...I paid a cool $625 for mine.

I just plugged it in and the power supply started to smoke so I'm pretty sure it's shot. I might be able to get one on ebay. Am working with the guy as we speak.

Also...have you 805 owners noticed an audio delay issue?? I've read that many of these have had issues and there is no cure?

My only concern is I get it and it doesn't fix the problem. Guess I could sell the part and the recvr then? Or...like you said...bring it in? I know for sure the ps is out. It smokes but now bad. And the video still works?? I just don't get audio?

check with the source you got it from, did they have the same issue, and if so why didn't they tell you. since you did get it for free it would be worth taking it to an authorized repair place to see what it would cost to fix it. If it's not too much (say about or less than 1/3 the cost of a new one now) then it might be worth having it fixed. they should also evaluate the unit as a whole too as well as just the problem with your audio. I have an 805S and have never had one problem with it in any respect. best of luck with it.

I fully knew of the audio problem before I got it. That was the reason they replaced it...with a Denon. Said they didn't like how hot it got. The guy had it in a cabinet without any ventillation? Had cable box and blu ray in it, too. Whoever did the original install wasn't very bright? He still needs a fan in it. Maybe I'll get the Denon in a month or two, too? LOL!!!

Keep in mind Onkyo made the problem better. Personally I have to look for it and even then I sometimes have a hard time looking for the lip sync. It doesn't bother me, and remember most AVRs have lips sync issues of some kind.

Does it hold the HDMI audio? And what have you done to combat the heat?

What do you mean hold??? And as far as the heat. The first month I had it, I was just keen enough to turn it off when I was done and not use it for extended periods of time...like leaving it on when I wasn't using it. It would get really really hot. Like I couldn't hold my hand down on it for more than a few seconds. It ran flawless though with no heat related issues. Right now I have a tower fan blowing cool air over the top of the unit and moving around what would have been stagnet hot air. I'm looking to pick up an antec A/V cooler for it that will suck up hot air and expell it away from the unit.

Some rcvrs only pass thru the audio (and not "hold" it and play it thru the rcvr). You have to use seperate audio cables (optical, D coax or analog) to to get audio from the sources. The company that hooked this up before had opticals and HDMIs jooked up. From what I understand you only need the HDMI hooked up and and it will hold or keep the audio. You don't need the audio cables? Maybe they just wanted to soak the guy for everything? Was probably Ultimate or FireDog. LOL!!!

Haha...I smell rip off. I run HDMI to the reciever...for audio, which it plays, and it strips the Video and sends it unaltered to my tv.

Should I go for it if the guy will take $100 for the power supply?
