Recently my Sammy has been making a loud buzzing sound similar to a tablesaw cutting wood. It sometimes goes away and comes back, More often for the past week. Very annoying. Spoke to Samsung, then to TV repair shop, both said "Might" be color wheel and research on web also concurs with diagnosis. TV shop want $160 for the wheel and $200 install. On the web they are selling for $100 around. Is it difficult to change this? Should I try it myself. I also havent changed my bulb in 3 years and he said it would be around $200 for that. For a total of $560 maybe I should just replace it with the newer 1080p DLP which I saw at 6th ave electronics for $999.
What should I do? |

The color wheel is part of the light engine and that is the whole brains of your tv. If you are not very electronically handy i would not suggest replacing a color wheel by yourself. There are many little ribbon cables and tiny connectors that can be damaged. Thats not to say it not possible to fix.
I would say the easiest thing would be to purchase the LED dlp. No bulb changes and you could get an extended warranty. That way you would not have to worry about these kind of problems. Unless you want to attempt to change the color wheel and bulb yourself. Worst case is your tv is broke and from the sounds of it, it already is. There is no real reason to change the color wheel until it finally goes all the way out. Unless the sound is that annoying. The tv will work just have a noisy color wheel. |

Yeah, I have really been considering a new DLP. The problem is the 50" Sammy is discontinued and would be a perfect fit in my wall unit. The 56" means I need to modify the unit to get it to fit. My fatherinlaws best friend is a TV repair guy so he said he will look at it. Told me if I bought the part online he would install it for me. He owes my pops some favors... I wish i could just find that money tree...
