Default Does every Blu-ray player display 1080i through component?

I have a 65 inch Mitsubishi ws-a65 1080i. It only has component connections so I can't use DVI or HDMI cables. I bought a DVD upconverter and since I have to run it through component it maxes out at 480p because it doesn't allow it to send the higher definition through component for reasons that I don't understand. Reading various pages I think I could hook up a Blu-ray through component and it would give me a 1080i signal.

Since I don't have HDMI or DVI I would need the Blu-ray player to send the 1080i through component because it would just be a waste of money if it doesn't. Does every Blu-ray player send the 1080i output through component or are they just a selected few? Also since I'm just pretty much new to the Blu-ray, I see that the Blu-ray players have to have the firmware updated every so often. Will this always be the case with Blu-ray players or is there a point where it would stop? I would hate to by a Blu-ray player and then a few years from now i find out they stopped offering new firmware for the player I bought because they discontinued production on that model.

Thanks

Yes they do, although some players you have to go into the setup menu and tell it to output at 1080i.

You're welcome, oh and to answer the firmware question, I think eventually (and don't quote me on this, just my opinion) firmware will become a thing of the past or it will become extremely rare.

And this is also true for Blu-Ray players. A few years ago, people could buy a DVD player which could be modded or remote hacked to output upscaled 1080i off DVD's.

Recently, however, the 1080i censorship over components was reinforced, by demand from Hollywood studios, something, by the way, that send us back to a struggle between video enthusiasts and movie buffs versus the film industry when HDMI first tried to push component connections away and TV sets deprived of HDMI to obsolescence.

The purpose of this reinforcement strategy is to make sure that only HDCP compliant gear would be able to get hi-def signals.

Enthusiasts, mostly driven by forum sites, won part of this battle, when studios finally allowed for Blu-Ray players to send 1080i signals though component leads, but solely when BD media is played back.

Until today, only people with older DVD player may get the benefit of upscaling via components, as currently you can't get a single DVD or Blu-Ray player (to the best of my knowledge) that can give you such a feature.

Yeah it was upsetting when i foung out I couldn't upconvert dvd's through component. I'll end up buying the Blu-ray player at around June. In the mean time I'm still looking into the upconverting my dvd through component and I'm wondering if an hdmi to dvi cable is used and hooked up to a dvi to component cable will it get the job done? Not sure if there will be a loss of quality. If seen those to different cables online and they don't seem expensive.

I've never seen one of those. Besides, a component connection at the display would not be able to return the required handshake. I doubt the player would transmit 1080i video under those circumstances.

Thanks. I was just googling it and it came up but I really didn't look too much into it.

I think Blu-ray players will not upconvert main stream DVDs over component.

But I have seen with my Insignia Blu-ray player hooked up over component to a 1080i Panasonic Tube TV that a select few of my music DVDs are being upscaled.

I've also read that non-commercial DVDs, like your own home videos will be upscaled over component. I've not tested that myself, only read about it.

Have you tried setting it to 720p?

Well my tv only had 480i, 480p, and 1080i. I can't do anything with the hd output for the dvd though.

Default Second question about the future of Blu-ray movies through component.

I've been reading around the forum and have read that in a few years Blu-ray movies might not be playable through component. From what I understand it's some kind of protection they have now but aren't used at the moment. Is this true? Will it happen? Or is that idea dead?

If that's the case it would seem that it is more of an issue with the Blu-Ray movies and not with the current players. I'll admit, it would be upsetting buying a movie and it might not be playable on my Tv. Although I'm sure there will be a program that will allow you to copy you BD and remove any protection it has but it's not as fun spending your money and not being able to view the original.

Or will it be more with the players themselves? Possible firmware update in the future will prevent 1080i output through component? Or even future players will include that? Similar to my DVD upconverter, I can't output 1080i through component regardless of what dvd I put in it. If I buy a Blu-ray player though, I get that I could make a copy of my Dvd movies removing any protection and the Blu-ray player would be able to upconvert it through component.

I've decided to buy a Sony Blu-ray player in about June. I was looking into the BDP-S350 but saw that a BDP-360 is coming out so I would wait and see what better features does it have. Any input will be greatly appreciated because I'm trying to get the most info I can about the product I'm planning on buying.

i havent heard anything about the future protection like that. imo it would be a mistake. im in the same boat as you where it comes to the tv capabilities. the differences between the sony 350 and 360 can be compared now. either on this site or sonystyle.

For older Mits owners like myself, I found this to be the only alternative for viewing upconverted DVD's: http://www.curtpalme.com/HDFury2.shtm.

I just picked up a Panny BD80, so it will take me a few months before I pick one up.

^Thanks. I saw that a while back but for that price I prefer to buy a blu-ray player instead. I have a very small dvd collection, 10 movies, because I bought my first DVD in late 2006 lol. Upconversion for me isn't such a big necesity at this point.

This time I'm jumping on the new technology early on. I already have 8 Blu-ray movies and I'll pick up my first player next month.
