Default Off the air HD antenna with HDMI?

Hello everyone,

I have a question that I haven't been able to find an answer for.

I dont have cable, but love to get HD off the air. Is there an antenna that I could plug to my receiver via HDMI?

My Sharp 46 inch LCD only support 1080p via the HDMI. So I'm thinking that if I plug a regular coaxil straight to my LCD, I wont be able to get my full 1080p or what ever the highest quaility i could get via the air.

Any suggestions on antennas? or anything else i could buy to get the best quaility off the air HD.

The reason I also would like to plug it to my reciever is so that I could get the highest quaility sound.

Thanks in advance.

Turo

An antenna signal cannot be passed through your HDMI port. It needs to feed your receiver through the coax input. I think you are confused as to how all of this works. Once the OTA signal is decoded in a receiver, it can then be passed via HDMI. You can do this with an external receiver, but why would you if your set has a built-in receiver?

Your tv has no tuner? OTA is 1080i/720p but you should be able to get Dolby Digital also if a program is broadcast with it. What do you have for audio output on the tv?

Thanks Ricshoe

I need to double check if my receiver actually has a cable antenna coaxil input.

So once I plug my antenna to my external reciever, then it will be decoded so that my video and sound will be outputed via my HDMI to my TV?

That sounds promising.

I'm new to the OTA logistics since I've been using Cable all my life.

And the reason I would like to plug it to my reciever is that i could gut the full benefit of my speakers, not the TV speakers.

looking forward to your response.

Thanks again
arturo

I have everything pluged in to my reciever. The PS3, 360 etc. Then the output to my TV via HDMI. I get my sound via the external speakers, not the TV speakers.

I understand that. You should be able to use your tv's tuner for ota and then run a coax/or optical cable to your receiver for audio. What is your tv's model#?

Turomania,

I was in the market for a similar antenna about six months ago. I ended up picking up a small, flat indoor antenna and it worked wonders.

I can't remember how exactly I rigged everything, but I was able to watch the Super Bowl in HD (for free) and with my surround sound on.

To make a long story short, I don't think there are any antennas like that with an HDMI connection.

So I should be able to get a decent picture quality with the regular cable coax that comes with the OTA antennas?

I see what your saying. Since there's input coming straight to my tv from the OTA, then I could output sound via optical from my TV to my receiver.

hhhmmmm now where getting somewhere.

Again I apology for my newbee questions. I just recently consider an over the air antenna and just dont know much about them yet. I have always used regular cable.

I have the LC-46D92U Sharp LCD

You should get a great picture from ota. Just go buy a cheap antenna and see what you can tune in. Your tv has optical out, so you can run a cable to your receiver to get your sound.

Very cool.

The only thing the bugs me about that is my TV manual says that the only way get get full 1080p is via my HDMI's and my Components.

I know we can't fuall 1080p via the OTA, but I'm wondering how much less HD I'm getting using only the cable coaxil input that most all OTA antennas come with.

When I say 'receiver', I mean tuner (something that will decode OTA signals). Most TVs have these already built-in, though some do not. If yours does, just plug the antenna cable into your TV and you will get OTA HD channels in their standard 720p/1080i broadcast resolutions (there is no 1080p broadcast HD). For better audio, run an optical cable from your TV to your AV receiver as blujacket mentioned.

Nothing less. The coax cable is not carry an HD picture. It's carrying an ATSC TV signal to the tuner in your TV set. The tuner produces the HD 1080i or 720p picture.

I have the same Sharp LC-46D92U TV. Before I hook it up using a wall mount, I want to know which inputs feed their audio through to the optical digital audio output connection. The manual is useless on this one. Does anyone know?

Most TV's only output OTA audio signals via the optical out.

I think most have answered your questions, I will just add

use http://www.tvfool.com/index.php?opti...pper&Itemid=90 enter your area and then use the map to pinpoint your place, it should tell you what channels you can receive and what you need antenna wise
