Default Front Right Speaker is too quiet....why?

my front right monitor is quieter than the front left monitor. this is what i have done to troubleshoot. I ran the test tone and i have to turn it up to -4.5 to get it to match the volume of the fl monitor which is at -10.5. i pulled the speaker wire, re prepped it then put it back on. i switched the monitor sides to see if it was the speaker its self and no difference. its my worst fear to think its coming out of the receiver this way, but i think this is the case. just looking for some reassurance i am getting ready to take some pictures if it helps.

If it's not the speakers, then sadly, it might be the receiver - would it be the polarity of the wire? Maybe. I dunno.

Shouldnt be anything with your wire. It could be location of the speaker in relation to walls or other structures in the room. Try keeping the speaker plugged in and move it around the room. I know you said you switched the Left and Right speakers, try keeping them in the same output of the receiver, but move the speakers.

Sokr, I don't think that would make a 6 dB difference...would it? Unless the seating position was far or the room dimensions were huge...

i did switch the speakers only. i kept the speaker wire plugged in the receiver, unplugged it from the back of the speakers, then swapped them. i was thinking it could be room acoustics but it is noticeably quieter when sitting on the floor directly in front of the speaker.

it can be room acoustics, if it was placed too close to a wall or corner, it would 'appear' to sound larger than it is.

at this point, did we isolate that
1. the speakers arent the problem,
2. speaker wire polarity is set properly?

heres a quick test.

unhook both speaker wires,
get new ones and
connect them to the 'good' speaker
measure
do this once again with the 'bad' speaker.

any difference?

if not, lets go a little bit 'extreme' (i hate this word)
take both speakers down
place em in the middle of the room and continue testing.

if both channels on the reciever work and drive em equally, then there shouldnt be anything wrong, it would be the acoustics.

if the same channel is still faulty, then we have a problem.

im sure you know what to do at this point.

I have had this exact situation before. For me when I switched the speakers the lower volume followed that particular speaker so I think it was something to do that speaker. Maybe something in it went bad?

thats why i was hoping he can isolate that by putting the speakers smack down in the middle of the room, avoiding further interactions with anything close to it.

i also wanted to see if it may be the speakers themselves. by moving them (albeit a tad of a challenge) we can further inspect them too.

how old is the receiver?

my initial prognosis may be the following
1. polarity issues - check speaker polarity firsthand.
2. receiver - failing amp.
3. speaker - loose terminal soldering or what not. im not sure yet.

the receiver is brand newish. about two months old. i am getting ready to update my gallery. its a smaller room. so i just tried moving the speakers around the room and it makes no difference with that channel. when the test tone is on any other channel it sound perfect or the way test tone noise should sound and then when it get to that fr channel its quieter and the louder i turn up the noise it seem to get static noise also. i am starting to come to the conclusion that it is the receiver. i dread having to deal with onkyo customer service. i have heard horrible things, but there are a 1000 other forums on that.

double check your speaker connections tho. see if your speaker wire connection is correct based on its polarity.

just give it a shot.

if not, then there we have it. receiver it is.

best of luck to you.

ya..i pulled the wire on both the speaker side and the receiver side and re-prepped both ends. my front channels are bridged so i tried hooking them up normal and setting it to normal on the receiver settings and still made no difference ...looks like i get to try and deal with onkyo customer service

im on a tangent now but i was just looking through jomari's gallery and i had some questions about adding some padding in my speakers. if there are any forums on this that would be cool to send me a link otherwise.... can you use the padding that pulls apart in clumps or is it better to use the sheets and should i use it in my monitors too or just the sub?

so you're the rptv owner. nice setup by the way, hopefully you can add on a gallery thread if i may make some suggestions.

anyhoo, back on topic,

which speakers are you planning to 'break into'?

yes there are links here that would help out rebuild your speakers, adding in polyfill and the like. big daddys repairing upgrading thread...

it fairly depends on what your planning to do with it. personally, i chose to use the sheeted one, first because of the price, and second, because i didnt want any polyfill scattered around the house when the sub hits subsonic.

if you wanted to use em for the fronts, im not quite sure if it would help regarding the higher frequencies tho. anything higher than 120hz, wouldnt be affected by polyfill, so its moot imo.

welcome to the foray mtbkr, even if it is a month old greeting. you happen to be fijiian by the way? great quote on your stand.

you happen to be fijiian by the way?.....ya the tv is an oldy but a goody(in my opinion). i plan to upgrade to a 60inch koru sometime this year. i was tinkering with idea of putting it in my sub and monitors but was not sure if it would make a big difference in the monitors. thats why we ask

listen to the wisdom of the toothless ones - this is a fujiian quote. thats why i asked.

in regards to the tv, hey, if it aint broke dont fix it right? im sure in time, heck might be the perfect time, for you to buy one when it breaks down.

the sub would definitely benifit from it, and quite a simple investment in doing so. dont worry, a couple of us has tried it, and has improved the experience so far.

check out our other threads, im sure you'd be interested.
