Default Too Close for Projector?

right now im contemplating using a front projector in my theater room rather than my 67"...now im only going to be about 8-10 feet away..with the 67" being about 1.5' from the wall...the room is 19'x12' with two rows of seating...after doing a test fitting i find the 67" to give me a big picture at the current distance...besides pq, will i really benefit from going to an epson 6100 and 103" projector screen...or will it just be way too overwhelming?

I sit 10' from a 106" screen..... and I could probably sit as close as 8'

After that... I'd say it's "Too Much"

I have 120" at 10 feet and I actually wish I could go bigger. I do not know what kind of eye fatigue people are getting but I have not had any. By the way I have the Epson Home Cinema 6100 you are talking about and I love it. Bigger is always better with movies. After you start watching the big screen you will ask yourself how you ever watched a movie on the 67". I have a 60" behind my screen and it is hardly getting used because it seems so small now.

No..... no eye fatigue..... but I do get that "sleepy" feeling, and "shock" when you walk into the light.... it's more to do with watching in complete darkness than anything else.....

I'd compare the feeling to that of what you feel when you walk into the lobby at your local cinema after watching a movie there

It could just be me though.... I can get sleepy just watching a movie on the sofa in the living room in the afternoon, on the 37" LCD, and feel worthless for the rest of the day.... and other times I'm wired, and will watch a 3 hour movie on the projector at 2am

I also average about 4-5 hours of sleep per night.... so I don't have the healthiest lifestyle

For a television they usually say that you should sit somewhere between 1.5 and 2 times the diagonal size of the screen. For your television between 8-11ft.

For projectors the measure is typically around 2.5-3x the picture height in a constant height system or 1.25-1.5x the picture width in a constant width system. For a seating distance of 10' that equates to an anamorphic screen of 104"-124", or a 16x9 screen of 92"-110". Obviously these are just suggested screen sizes.

IMO, if you can fit a projection system in your room, then there is no reason why you shouldn't get one.

This site calculates your screen size to your distance and tells you the best distance to sit from your screen

I sit at 9.5 feet from 100'.

There's no really eye fatigue itself because the light come from behind. Unless you have a retro reflective screen witch can add a little fatigue because the light is reflected back in you're face. LOL a lot of time i'am sleepy when i watch a movie (especially during the week) and something i can almost feel alsleep in front of it LOL!

My seating is 14 feet away from a 100" screen in my home cinema. My personal opinion is that 8-10 feet is a little close - but with today's screens and projectors, there should be no reason that sitting at that distance would sacrafice any quality.

I really believe that it is a matter of personal preference. Could you sit in front of a 103" screen at 8 feet? Sure. Would I? No. I would go with a slightly smaller screen, but I don't believe that you HAVE to.

Try projecting on to the wall first - if you are able to - to determine what size of picture works best for you, and then go with that.

Hope that helps.

I agree, I can comftorably sit 6.5 feet away from a 106" 16x9 screen comftorably, however some people find it overwhelming. Its all depends on the individual.

Are you doing a 16:9 screen or 2.35:1 screen?

well i came to the realization that it will be a bit overwhelming...maybe not so much for me, but for others and my gf...so we are going to stick with the 67" at ~8'...but it would have been a 16:9

I sit about 8-9' away from a 92" screen and it's fine. I could go up to 100" but above that I'd have to start moving my head to take in the entire image.

The THX TAP spececifies the recommended angle of views from about 1.4PH (picture heights) for the nearest acceptable front row to 3.6PH for the last row (the one touching the back-wall) from a constant image height screen, which makes the seat in the middle of the room be 1.8PH. I watch movies at around 2PH.

You should be aok at 10 feet give or take. But I wouldn't push it. 8 feet would be to close.

I would try 92" at 8 feet. Its still a whole lot better than 67".

Regarding quality, at 8 feet you might not enjoy DVD's anymore. On the plus side, it will motivate you more to double dipping on blu-rays.

I have an Elite 120" screen with a room size of 14' x 20'. I only have a couch right now, so I am sitting 17-18 feet away. Once I have my seating in the next couple of months the front row will be about 12-14 feet away. I play guitar hero while standing in the middle of the room and never have any eye fatigue. I too wish I could just fill the whole wall with a larger screen; maybe the 150".

I sit around 8' to around 11' or so away from my 106" screen. I actually like that the image is overwhelming. I find it more realistic than being able to see the entire environment all at once on a smaller screen, if that makes sense.

I agree size matters and see no issue for you going to that large size screen. To me a front projector is always the best as I use it for both TV and movies. Mount the projector without a screen and just display it on the wall and zoom it to as large as you find good for you then buy a screen about that size. I am about 10-12' away from a 110" screen and would rather have a screen another two feet wider!
