Default I just bought a 1080p HDTV, now I need a Blu-ray player.

Hello all.

I just bought a 42 inch 1080p television from best buy, and I am now looking to purchase my first stand-alone BD player.

1. Audio is not a big concern.
2. I would like to have as many bells and whistles, but cost is a slight issue. 3. I'm looking for something that is easily hackable; region free is a must. 4. Playback abaility is a major concern; I need something that can play as many different formats as possible.
5. Ohh, and up-converting is something I will need as well seeing that I have 500+ dvds.
6. I'm not exactly sure how pandora or netflix works, but I do have wi-fi in my home if necessary.

Basically, I am just looking for the biggest bang for my buck. I am open to any questions or comments you guys may have. I've been considering the samsung bd-1500. Someone steer me in the right direction please. I'd be thankful for any feedback.

Right now their no official Blu-ray player that is 'Region Free' the only one is The Momitsu. All other are pretty much the way they are unless you buy an expensive pre modded player and even then, they don't convert NTSC to PAL or Pal to NTSC..

Okay... let's pretend I never mentioned the region free stuff... then what?

1. Audio is not a concern.
2. Cost is a slight issue.
3. I need something that can play as many different formats as possible.
5. Up-converting is something I will need.

I want as many bells and whistles as possible, but I don't want to break the bank. I'm not exactly sure how pandora or netflix works, but I do have wi-fi in my home if that makes a difference. Ideas

I'd go for a ps3, unless there's a specific reason why you don't want one...

seeing that there are a lot of ps3 pea"nut huggers" a majority of the guys here will tell you that is the way to go. but the oppo is probably the baddest machine out there right now, it does bitstream all major codecs without doing a pcm conversion (the ps3 does NOT) of course most people will say there is no sound difference. But with the oppo you have dsd (sacd) out , once again evryone will say there is no sound difference, but remember sony created sacd and touted dsd as being superior to pcm, and now its not because
the ps3 HAS to convert dsd to pcm in the ps3 before sending it.

i guess what i am saying is if you want the most bang for the buck, get the oppo. dvd up-scaling is BY-FAR superior to the ps3, and it has an abt de-interlacing chipset which is also better than what the ps3 uses. it plays dvd-audio, which sony will NEVER offer on anything they sell. now if you want wireless firmware updates and a game machine, then i would go with the ps3.

i have both, and the oppo kills the ps3 in all audio/videophile catagories.

sorry ps3 guys, but loading time is NOT one of those catagories

If cost is an issue..... the Oppo is way too expensive. (like $800 right?)

P.S. The Sony 360/560's load in 6 seconds.....bye-bye PS3.........

According to the Sony representative I talked to on Tuesday the BOP-S560 does not have WiFi.

The quality of the upconverting of the OPPO Digital was one of the reasons I bought it, and the ability for it to play virtually every type of audio disc from SACD, DVDA, etc. and the impressive blu ray specifications were the other reasons. They design and sell direct which is why OPPO Digital to me is by far a better quality product than Sony or Panasonic. The OPPO 83 is $499 and you will have to spend will over one thousand dollars + to get something that compares!

next time, why not respond to the right quote, you notice i ended my quote there. why not respond to the dsd quote?

HUGE FACT: SONY touted dsd as being superioir to pcm, NOT ME, and now because the PS3 CANNOT bitstream it, once again FACT. now there is no difference in sound quality??? dsd converted to psm is the same??? once again smart guy, why didnt you respond to that??? why respond to a close-ended quote???

if you read again its says plain as day "of course most people will say there is no sound difference" and my quote ended there.

so why not be a good boy and stick to reading and not trying to feel smarter by attempting to tear down someones post

And you can prove this where?

I say that because I can hear a distinct difference between the PS3 doing the conversion and my Oppo bitstreaming the same content to my Denon receiver.

I feel electronics can make audio sound warmer or cooler even if it playing the same audio codec. That is why a movie or music may sound one way on one receiver or Pre/pro-amplifier combo but different with another one (both using the same speakers, of course).
