As I get ready to upgrade my Sony BDP-S350, I'd like to know if there are any stand-alone BD players that do not freeze up on certain discs (ex. Narnia: Prince Caspian, and quite a few others). I am curious about the new Oppo BDP-83, but would like to hear from you all about any BD player you have had good experiences with.

My Panasonic BD35 never froze, but it's on Firmware 1.9 and has a 4Gb SD Card. It still has a problem with some newer BD's because I get a message that it can't read the disk. I have to Prime my BD35 with a Blu-ray it has played before it can read the new one. I have a feeling it's all the DRM Junk the Movie Industry feels it has to load. That's why I like to make Back-up Disks with just the Movie, then I take off all the DRM Junk and it plays better. Maybe one of these days the Movie Industry will wake up.

There's def something wrong with your BD player if its freezing up. I have three and have never had anyone of them freeze up playing a BD.
OR There's something wrong with the blu-ray discs that you're playing...have you tried doing the same on a diff player to see if the same discs were freezing? Last edited by wafi; 07-07-2009 at 02:27 AM. |

Guess I also have to chime in to say that my Sony BDP-S350 plays all my BDs flawlessly, including both Narnia titles. Should say that I have kept the firmware fully updated with each new official release.
I am very happy with the player, but if I were to upgrade, it would likely be to a Pioneer unit or the Oppo. |

While mine have worked flawlessly, ALL Blu-ray players can freeze. PS3's, Oppos, Pioneers, Sony, all of them. They are basically specialized computers and power consumption and heat can cause any to lock up. If they do, then holding down the power button to do a hard reset will correct is 98% of the time. If that fails to correct the problem, then make sure the firmware is up to date. That corrects the other 1.99999% percent of the problem. Tips to avoid are not to have the unit in an inclosed space with no air flow, and do not stack things on it that block the vents. If you are nasty and never dust your house, that can contribute too.
