Default Who knew that DVDs were inferior?

What I mean is that when DVDs were taking off from around 97-2001 and ps2 coming out, while building your collection and excited about the technology, even tho tvs weren't as advanced yet, did alot of you say this will do good for now but in 5+ years we're going to hopefully get uncompressed video-audio? Personally I was celebrating the clarity over VCR and the ability to find-buy-store more than tapes as well...

Things change. I knew something else was/would come. Did not know what it was or when but I knew something would. In about 12-15 years in other forum will will have a thread call

Who Knew That BDs Were Inferior?

Life goes on.

I was happy that they were better than VHS tapes and that they were widescreen. Also, I don't know of any blu-rays with uncompressed video.

I had a DVD player in late 1997 or so.....

I got a PS2 in 2006 or so.....

I don't see the correlation you're making

I knew "better" would come along..... And I still think better will come along eventually now.... Hopefully Blu-ray has the past, as well as present, success that DVD had/has.

Me too!

Widescreen was the biggest selling point for me. I still don't understand people that prefer Full-screen. Oh yes, they're still out there, lurking in the corners of your favorite video store. Oh and surround sound is huge!

Got my first DVD player in 2003. At the time, I was aware of the pending HD DVD and blu-ray technologies still in development. Why didn't it stop me from buying DVD? Karma, I suppose. My brother had borrowed 20 bucks and repaid me by buying me the TRON 20th anniversary DVD. I didn't have a player. By Christmas 2003 I was working at Radio Shack and got a great deal on a VCR/DVD combo. When I got a REAL job I suppose I went nuts having all the extra cash to spend.

I certainly never suspected DVD of having bad transfers. That is something I realized when I bought blu-rays. Nor did I suspect that blu-ray would follow that same path and give us sucky transfers like the non-remastered "Blade Runner" and the current "Total Recall".

If 4k HDTV and home video is to become a reality the studios better start stepping up the quality control. I do not desire to purchase 4K home video only to find it is not up to snuff. They already got me with that non-sense.

With that said, my blu-ray collection will gladly sit side-by-side with any new format of the future with little to no desire to double dip.

I thought I was smart for buying only wide-screen DVD because I knew one day I would have a widescreen TV.

Bingo, I loved it when rental places still put the "be kind, rewind" stickers on their DVDs when they first started having them available.

When DVD was out, I thought I would never see another format in my generation ... or at least not until my pension. The leap was so big from VHS to DVD that I couldn't imagine anything better hitting the market.

... of course, that was until HDTV's came out.

Now, I hardly dare to speculate how long Blu-ray will last. I thought real 3D TV wouldn't be for my generation anymore but now, I feel all bets are off. The rate of technological advancements is staggering.

I liked DVDs when they came out and was stoked for them because of all the great things a digital experience brings with it (no rewinding, chapter skipping, yaddah yaddah), but they never wowed me the way Blu-ray does. I've purchase more Blu-ray movies in the short time I've owned a Blu-ray player (less than a year) than I did in six+ years of owning a DVD player.

LOL I still remember the TV spots for movies on VHS, DVD and HD DVD, never would've guessed all 3 formats would be SO thoroughly outclassed this quickly.

I knew from the day DVD came out I'd be replacing it eventually.

You didn't?

I'm waiting for the day of high resolution lossless audio/video, which will probably be the last format ever needed.

The PS2 really boosted the popularity of DVD players and DVD sales (same way the PS3 did for Blu-Ray), since it was one of the first players a lot of people had.

I got my PS2 in early '01. It was my first DVD player and it was exciting to not have to use that damn tracking button! Oh and rewinding FTL!

I don't know, I'm sure at some point they'll be able to beam movies directly into your brain. And then from there you'll be able to have whole vacations, and other things beamed in also...wait, didn't they make a movie about that?

I never really considered it. I mean I already had over 200 VHS tapes and like was said earlier, I was just glad to not have to rewind my movies. I always figured I'd just move on like I did from VHS.

Format was a bad choice of words there...when I said "format" I was thinking in terms of an encode, not in terms of the delivery medium. The medium will have to change over time (it'll get smaller, go download, be directly input to your brain, whatever ) but the encode will not need to change.

The sound quality was the jump that I really appreciated in DVD's over VHS. Now DVD's sound pretty bad compared to their blu-ray counter-parts. PQ of course being night and day as well.

DVDs won me over in 2003 with their size, chapters and lack of rewinding over VHS. For me, glad menus and subtitles are almost required on blu-rays, not to mention the sound and visual quality are usually leaps and bounds ahead of any previous format.
