Arrow NBC Prepares for Leno Failure

Quote:
NBC hasn't put out any official word on its 2009-10 lineup yet, but the pieces are starting to fill in -- with the latest one being the renewal of the veteran drama "Medium."

Details are a little bit sketchy on the show's sixth season, but reports say NBC is ordering something less than a typical full season. The series is likely to get between 13 and 18 episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The "Medium" pickup follows on the heels of NBC renewing its rookie cop series "Southland" late last week. Another new show, "Parks and Recreation," is expected to join them when NBC makes its schedule announcement Monday afternoon.

The trade papes are still saying, meanwhile, that "Chuck" fans may be kept in suspense for a week or two while NBC makes a decision on its on-the-fence shows. Dsicussions with studios about renewals are primarily focused on budgets and license fees in anticipation of a weak upfront ad market.

NBC is also reportedly stocking up on dramas for midseason as a hedge against Jay Leno's prime-time show faring poorly in the fall.
That last part is what surprised me, so they are canceling great shows like 'Life' because Leno needs the space, because if there is something we need it's Primetime Leno, yet they are renewing Medium and Parks and Recreation and stocking up on other horrible shows incase Leno fails.

i don't see how it can. the new jay leno show will be prime time whereas the chevy chase show was a late night talk show. two different things entirely.

I'm not a fan of Jay Leno. I just don't think he's funny.

But older fans who may have gone to bed too early to miss his 'white bread' Tonight Show monologues may support his new earlier show.

The top half of that range.

Seriously, I guess Leno is just not my cup o' tea. I always preferred Letterman over him. Leno always seemed very boring to me.

But I guess I'm not with the trends most of the time.. because I'm not a Conan fan either.

I just do not get why the think they need a Leno show. I mean sh*t, if they still wanted him on why didn't they just leave him on the tonight show!!??

Oh well, I've pretty much already given up on tv programming. The networks are morons nowadays, reality tv is terrible and has ruined tv, new shows get canned one or two episodes in, good shows get axed while crap stay on. I just cannot figure out how Heroes got renewed.

I said I do love Conan, I'd just watch him on ABC or wherever he went.

Conan is okay. I just hate that he has to make himself the focus of attention during the interviews. He busts out into some repetitive schtick so that the 'guest' can hardly get a word in.

It's annoying to me.

That said, his monologue and the show's overall creativity is fine.

Yeah, I see what you mean. There must be something to it where Leno doesn't want to continue to host the Tonight Show...or something. I don't really know the ins and outs, but what I do know is I'm glad as heck that Conan will be on during that time slot now. I just hope they don't change the format of Conan's show, because it's very funny in my opinion. I will be glad Jay is gone (or moved); Conan should have been in the "better" late night talk show time slot for a long time now. FOR ME TO POOP ON! jk

Interesting point. I wonder if he would have. Would that've meant a Letterman dismissal then? I ask because; why would Conan jump ship from one station to another if only to host the same time slot (which is a crappy time slot to begin with)?

Everyone that loves scripted television shows should hope that the Leno experiment fails miserably. If Leno clocks good ratings in prime-time, the other networks will almost assuredly duplicate the concept. Talk shows are cheap to make so they have a huge advantage over scripted shows.

a) mad at NBC for giving Leno the prime slot/guests before his show making him like the 2nd fiddle yet again now.
b) gets Lettermans gig when he eventually quits.

Pretty soon, the main networks will be mostly about reality television, and FX, AMC, TNT, USA, HBO & Showtime will have the best scripted shows.

I actually Mdium. I think it is a decent show. I hope Leno fails honestly. Soon TV will only be talk shows, reality shows, CSI, and Law and Order. Soon people will have no choice but to want HBO and Showtime for good televison programming.
