Default Ebooks

i don't know how they work when you purchase them. I want to be able purchase one, put on a thumb drive and take it to use on another computer. Are there sites that let you do that or are they locked to the computer that you purchase them on? Any help would be appreciated.

It depends on where you get it from. Some are simple PDFs so you can use it on any computer with Adobe Reader. Others restrict your use to just one computer, online use only, or their books are only viewable with specialized software supplied by the company. There is no set standard for ebooks.

Have you ever bought one or can you recommend one to use?

Does anyone know of any eBook devices (like a Kindle) that are PDF compatible?

Can the Kindle only handle books purchased on Amazon, or can I load up my own PDF files onto it as well?

Once again, depends on what you are looking for. I have only bought e-textbooks. I also have the Harry Potter series in e-book format as a back-up to my printed copies. I would suggest you search for ebooks and research each site. Find one you like and buy from them. I'm not sure what else I could suggest, it's quite simple.

Reading E-books on the computer is not so great at least for me. I've read short PDF's and well I can't imagine reading a full book like that.

As for devices such as the Kindle and the likes, I have not tried any of those yet so I don't know how that would go.

from the new Kindle DX page:

"Content Formats Supported:*Kindle (AZW), PDF, TXT, Audible (formats 4, Audible Enhanced (AAX)), MP3, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; HTML, DOC, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion."

they're taking pre-orders now...$489.00 might as well get a new netbook or laptop.

Or even put it toward a tablet PC. The biggest drawback of the Kindle is they aer so expensive.... yet they are still hard to get. Amazon was out of stock of the original one for a long time, and the only way to get one was to pay $100+ above the regular price, for one in the Marketplace. Maybe that's why they figured they could charge more for this new one.

On one hand, it's great that they're apparently selling well, but on the other I can't imagine they're selling that well (they're just selling out a small production amount). If they really want eBooks to succeed (how many times has it failed already?) I don't see how selling $500 eBook readers will help.

yeah your better off just getting a small laptop and buy the ones that work on computers. I do think its a good Idea and if they did have a good price point it could be a huge hit.
