Default upconverting video performance

Have a question been reading reviews of different A/V receivers and I have noticed that some receivers get a bad report for upconverting video, my question is how much does the receiver effect the video quality assuming the receiver has HDMI in/out and your equipment is HD(cable) & Blu-ray(dvd) can you lose pic quality if your receiver is poor?

im not sure exactly, you would have to read reviews for specific receivers for more info. Are you looking into any specific receiver?

Many of the reviews I've seen which address video upconversion are concerned with analog upconversion. For example, CNET didn't like my receiver's ability to upconvert, but they were talking about HDMI upconversion of analog video sources. This didn't bother me since I wasn't using component video. So when you read those reviews take note of what kind of upconverting they're talking about.
