Default Looking for a new receiver....

I want to upgrade my HK-AVR520 to something new. The HK will be kept for 2channel audio but I need something more "up to date" for my HT room.

I was originally looking at 3 different brands for the new system. The Marantz SR6003, the Yamaha HTR6290 and some Emotiva. My budget needs to be between 1200 to 1500 at the most. I was really looking into the Emotiva line
and going with the UPA-7 and UMC-1. The problem is I don't know when the UMC will be released. The site said end of June but its been pushed back again. So i was wondering if I should wait a little longer or pull the plug on one of the units above ?

what do you guys think ???

I'd give the Marantz SR6003 a try first. If your not happy with it, you can try the Emotiva UMC-1 next.

If you don't mind me asking, why have you ruled out Pioneer Elite? Since the new SC-25 and SC-27 are about to come out, you should be able to get a good deal on an SC-05 or SC-07, if you can find one that is. They're starting to get pretty scarce, but it might be worth it to track one down.

Otherwise, I would try the Marantz ahead of the Yamaha.

I don't know much about Emotiva receivers, so I cant say, I think personally I would look at the Marantz, Denon 2309/2809 (since they are being replaced now) I would also look at the Pioneer SC-05/SC-07, if it just gonna be a standalone receiver without an external amp. I personally would look at the Sony ES and Yamahas also if you are gonna use and external amp. I know that not a lot of people like the Sonys, but for video processing and functionality they really hold there own. If you plan to use and amp, and it sounds like it, then Sony may be a consideration too.

Best Buy still has both SC-05 and SC-07.

SC-05:http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1211454761340

SC-07:http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1211454761407

The price on online is wrong, I saw a SC-07 in the store the other day for $999. Definitely worth a look!

Well the main reason I didint look at these is pricing!

The SC-05 goes for $1800. I spoted one locally "used" for $1500 (i dont trust used in this dept.) And the SC-07 goes for $2100 approx. So both units are a little out of my price range... and since budget is something i need to look into I can't pick up a receiver at $1000 and then dish out another 700-800 for the amp.

My HK isnt cutting it in the power dept. The 520 only pumps out i think 75W's x 5 Into @ 8 Ohms. So i need something with more juice. In a 2.1 situation its more than enough and sounds great (even in HT mode it sounds good)...

Add a Emotiva XPA-5 now for an instant power boost. Add the Emotiva UMC-1 later to get lossless audio. Does your HK have pre-outs?

Ok. I got the impression from your original post (and I may have misunderstood) that you were considering a new good, stand-alone receiver or a new receiver/amp combo. I was recommending the Pioneer Elites as a stand-alone option. The SC-05 pushes 130 wpc and the SC-07 pushes 140 wpc, and they use ICE amps, and their receivers' output power actually matches the printed specs, unlike some other manufacturers who artificially inflate their spec numbers. Either would be a significant step up from what you have now, and you could still add an amp later if you think you need it.

I hope this doesn't seem pushy. I'm not trying to tell you what to buy. I'm just trying to provide information so you can make an informed decision.

The Emotiva is a good choice if you can deal with the time constraints.

I have to agree on the Wonderful Performance the Marantz Receivers Provide.I have been a fan of them for years and have heard nothing but good reviews and replies by those who sell, own, and use them.

Denon also makes good receivers and are always worth consideration if Price does not rule them out of the equation.

And I have to chime in on the Pioneer Elite line as well.I have always been impressed with the Pioneer Elite components.I have been the proud owner of Pioneer Elite in the early 90's and even then they seemed to be a step beyond most other receivers.

I had a Rotel/Adcom combo for my system in 1994 and the dealership I purchased them from also sold Pioneer Elite. So,I was able to do head to head competition between nice quality, lower priced seperates and a Good Quality all in 1 receiver(Pioneer Elite).

To me the Elites give up very little to good seperates. There are some natural disadvantages just because everything is housed in one chasis.
But any drawbacks are very small and almost negligable.

forsberg21 just became the Proud Owner of a New Pioneer Elite SC-05 about a month ago.He is very Happy with the performance, features, build quality, and price.
He got a Great Deal on the Price and paid only 3 digit figures for it Brand New with Full Warranty.

So while you have many different choices you can make, and many different comparisons to put together, make sure you purchase what you know will still make you happy 3 months from now.

Dont buy something just to have something now.If what you want means you have to wait a month or 2 is it worth the wait.If you dont wait when its released will you be thinking I should have waited, and that was what I really wanted.

Or if its something you can buy now make sure its the brand with the performance and features you want and need.Just dont buy something 3 months down the road you find yourself wishing you went down another road and made another choice.

Sometimes an extra month or two doesnt seem to take that long to pass.

I notice you have Energy speakers.I love Energy

Everyone has there own companies they put trust in,everyone will give you there honest opinion on what receivers you should look at and know ones wrong.

It really is going to come down to you and what you like in a reciever(for sound)

If it was me i would be looking into Denon or Yamaha.
From experience these two companies have awesome personalities that i love .
The sound they produce are second to none if you ask me. (in my opinion they would go great with Energy)

Isnt the XPA-5 a 5channel amp ? I want to go 7.1 on the next one, thats why i'm going for the UPA-7 if i do end up going Emotiva.

No, not at all... i'm trying to look into as many options as I can. So whatever people are suggesting im looking into. I'd like to get an Elite model but pricing is up there. And i am debating the whole separates thing...

I own the Yamaha 6190 and had them hooked up the Energy RC speakers for a month and they were a good match - also using an Emotiva amp. I know it's a different series you own but I noticed your also from Canada and I'm guessing Futureshop is the place you would be buying the 6290 from. If it is - they give you 30 days with the receiver and you can return it no questions asked if you don't like how they match up - then try out another receiver from Denon for another 30 days. That's what I did with the Energy speakers which sounded good - just the Paradigms sounded much better to me. I've been reading a lot about how good the Marantz sounds and really thought about crossing over but after recently hearing the RXV-1900 and SR6003 hooked up to Paradigm Monitors in the same room - I actually liked the sound of the Yamaha better. So again it's all personal preference I guess. Try out the Yamahas and Denons in your price range at Futureshop and if you find one there that you really like, you might not even need to hear the Marantz. Good luck man!

Hey DLS,

Isnt the 1900 the US version of the 6290 ? I see very small differences between the two...

I've seen them selling at one store I've been to in Edmonton and I just recently did that Marantz 6003 - Yamaha 1900 comparison at a local shop in Winnipeg. You wouldn't find it at the big stores like Futureshop but at the smaller local AV stores but it pretty much is the same - just like the HTR6190 and RXV1800 are with a few added extra features.

I'd suggest getting the Marantz 6003 now, then adding that Emotiva amp later, then you get both of the things you want.
