Lightbulb Another help topic from Nutty!

I know, I know you're probably tiring of me always asking for something. For starters I wasn't sure where to post this since it pertains to both my receiver and my TV. So here it goes. I'm trying to get my directv receiver to put a signal out to the cable/antenna section of my sony tv. I don't know if it needs a converter, a coupler of sorts or maybe just a cable with coaxial on one side and any of the other found on the receiver. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.
oh by the way the diagram i put in jpg form is more like a cave drawing, sorry!!!!!

Well the lower link didnt give the full size picture...but why are you going for cable/antenna when you have HDMI on both TV and the DTV receiver again?!?

Too be honest. I would normally not care, but according to Sony it is the only way for me to use PIP. Because I'm so thrilled with my TV. I plug all my components into it.

1. computer
2. ps3
3. blu-ray
4. directv receiver

all with HDMI connections.

I want to be able to watch a sporting event while working on the computer which PIP would do perfectly, if it worked.
Somebody suggested that I get an SD receiver and plug that it but I'm already using all the satellite outputs as it is.

So anyway thanks for any help I get with this one.

Nutty, you need to do one of two things in order to get PIP to work in your setup.
  1. Get a second receiver with RF output, which in the case of DirecTV will most likely be found on their standard definition box. This is the quick and easy method, and will work the best and most appropriately. This is what I'm doing.
  2. Get an RF modulator. This is kind of rudimentary, but it takes the composite signal of your device and turns it into RF. In your super-sweet drawing above, you'd plug the modulator into the back of your DirecTV DVR, and it would convert the signal into RF that your TV would be able to accept on its coaxial input.

With option #1, you will be able to have two different DirecTV pictures going to your TV at any given time, meaning you will be able to watch two different programs from DirecTV. If you're ever interested in watching two different programs at the same time — such as two sporting events — then this is the only way you'll be able to do that as long as you have a satellite provider for your television programming.

Option #2 will only allow you to have one video source, because you're creating two signals from one receiver... so you will not be able to attain "true" PIP, but you will be able to view PC on your HDMI input while also viewing a PIP window coming from the RF signal that we just created using the RF modulator.

Make sense?

Wow this is really strange! About 15 minutes after you posted the help topic for me, I could have sworn, I sat here and thanked you sincerely for all of your help. I even went as far as to write that you had told me last time about the SD receiver, but it was not possible becasue I had no outputs left on my dish. Well either way, Thank you VERY much, you just made my day.

Take care and if I see you in Santa Cruz this summer, the beers are on me.

Right on, man! I'm glad I was able to help. I see that you picked up one of those modulators. Hopefully this all works out for you. It should work, though. I use the composite outputs from my DVR to go to my DVD recorder, as my DVR puts out signal simultaneously over HDMI and composite, so you should be good to go with your modulator. Did you go to a local Radio Shack to get that or did you order it online or something?

I will take you up on the beer offer if you're ever around. You could check out my HT.

I went about 5 minutes from the house to the South Pasadena Radioshack, they had plenty in stock and different version. I figured, keep it cheap and simple for starters because there may be something developed to take care of the PIP issue with the Sony line of TV's. Too funny, the part that took the longest was me trying to find a coax cable and a 3-RCA cable, look at me thinking I'm with "the times."

I works like a charm though, so I'm good. The signal is not the greatest but since I'm basically using it while using my PC or PS3 as my primary it's of no real consequence. I'm still able to switch audio so I can be on my PS3 or CPU but still sit there and listen to a game. So problem solved, in my eyes.

Yeah my brother who's still up in S.C. works at one of the local "cool" restaurant/bars near downtown S.C. so if I'm up I'll send you a message via the forums.
