I'd love to if I owned the BD. I only own the DV version. I'm willing to take another pic though closer if there's something you want me to focus on.

Just received my copy, and I have to agree that the Blu-Ray version looks so much sharper it's not even close.
Heck it even makes most 4K titles released so far soft by comparison. Was looking forward to this release, it's a shame Universal botched the encode. It could've been the reference disk for the format based on how the Blu-Ray looks. On a positive note, the HDR seems well done. |

Not just that but the spatial detail too, it looks beautiful and I don't just mean "in comparison to ray's photos" because both of his pics are clearly doing something very funky to the resolution (though even with that limitation the UHD is clearly softer than the Blu, all things being equal between his shots, which certainly proves something in its own way). The DV seems to have a lot of fine grain/noise as well as detail, both of which would be nobbled by a big helping of noise reduction if it were baked into the source.

High Def Digest's review also confirms that the BD is sharper and more detailed than the UHD.

Boom. Keep calling me crazy folks. The review here reports exactly what I said. Close up shots look decent, but wide shots are smoothed over. Last edited by ray0414; 08-23-2016 at 01:04 AM. |

I bet someone wasn't paying attention or a knob didn't get twiddled or button didn't get pushed (or the wrong button)... |

John Archer and Steve Withers have heard the complaints, so hopefully they can pay special attention and if they report the issues hopefully those reviews get seen by people at Universal. |

Just to keep you guys up to date, I was able to talk to Stacy Spears of Spectracal and he had a look at my pictures. He said that him and his workmates have noted the softness of the disc as well just be quickly glancing. Hes going to work on getting some screen captures to eliminate issues that phone cameras can cause and it will be more clear. He has the means to have his voice heard especially with a big report hes releasing in October.

It's clear there is something wrong with this transfer. Those distance shots should not look soft and if it is indeed an HDR grading issue that caused this, it should be corrected. I can clearly see, even with poor camera equipment, in that post somewhere above that even the VUDU version looks incredible. There is no excuse for that being superior over the UHD, period. If this is a botched transfer job by Universal, they should correct it, send out replacement discs to those who already purchased it and replace the old version so new buyers will get the new disc. A studio sending out a bad transfer is nothing new; remember the Gladiator Sapphire Series blu ray that came out with that awful transfer? Despite Oblivion not being NEARLY as bad as what that abomination was, nevertheless it was a botched product that Paramount had shipped out. They corrected it, sent out replacement discs ( I bought the new disc myself) and the new transfer was, of course, incredible. I don't think Universal did this on purpose with Oblivion, I think it was another case where the final work was done and was shipped out as is and they clearly just didn't know. Again, not impossible for something like this to happen. Lucy's transfer from Universal is awesome, stunning. It proves Universal will do right with these movies and they are more than capable. In the end, there is NO REASON a blu ray should be superior in any aspect over a 4K UHD, period. The blu ray alone has always been a reference disc; how in the hell does the 4K version go below that? Preposterous. For those who argue that fact I will get behind every step of the way. For those who are picky about the UHD discs and expect the very best quality out of them I have no problems with because WE SHOULD be like that. Anything less is an absolute disappointment and in the end, its my opinion. I hope Universal will fix this for us and again, thanks for bringing it to light Ray. |
