It was an hypothetical example. Every major studio released pan & scan DVDs, as well, but later, they (more or less) stopped. The fact remains that the format is capable of producing the desired results; it's just a matter of convincing the distributors to use the format correctly.

Thats 1 scene. I can find over an hours worth of scenes that are softer. I'd say it's 80%+ that's softer. Cherry picking 1 scene doesn't represent the entire movie. |

I haven't A/B compared myself, I've done comparison pictures before, but the Samsung K8500 is fairly unwieldy. Perhaps I'll have to try when I can.

Not so sure about the suit, but--in this particular shot--the blu-ray coloration looks a little more primary, basic; the facial detail seems a bit splotchy, as if a color bandwidth roll-off--or something--clipped some of the extended detail available for display that the UHD brings out. But the blu looks plenty respectable, if not superior in other departments in different examples. Looking forward to more comparisons, if anyone has a jones to post 'em. |

I went back and decided to take a few more pix and check this out again.
BD on top, UHD bottom. and no, my camera is not out of focus. I zoomed in and never changed my zoom # the entire time. I find wide/long shots to be the worst, up close shots are much closer to each other. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I've had a look at this by flicking between the 2 discs running simultaneously and I must agree with Ray. The some wide shots do appear softer, but some do not. Same goes for the close up shots. But overall with the WRG and HDR applied, there is a more colourful and dynamic picture. Some shots are simply stunning.
I personally prefer the UHD disc overall, just. A solid 4.5/5 for me but if the overall detail level was improved it would be a solid 5/5. It's funny how the reviewer on this site didn't comment on the softer image though? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

![]() Opips: I've been running my new copy of the 1080p Oblivion and stopped at this mark to look things over carefully on my calibrated set; I see none of the traits I previously mentioned about the BD shot. No blue tint, nothing splotchy, no dropouts nor loss of subtle gradient of shading on the facial features. In this sense, it looks a lot like the UHD sample...and detail is aces. Not sure what happened with your example, but then we had to know that everything is a factor here: Your camera's image sensor, exposure level, tv adjustments in different display modes for each respective format, etc. |

Well it appears that I'm seeing the same thing though. I'm using the Panasonic player and their OLED for UHD. For the 2K disc I'm using my Marantz 7007 and the same screen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Appreciate the pics; very interesting. Atmos and HDR must really bring it for some to opt for the UHD over the standard blu. Do you have a format preference at this point? This issue would drive me nuts, not just in noticing the softness...but it's the principle of the thing; the idea of paying for a performance hit. Pretty galling.
