I haven't decided on Lucy for sure, but it does seem that impressions are polarized on this movie. However I would never rent it knowing a better version is available.

Wonder if they dropped the commentary or if that's just an oversight.

You could always turn the audio off and just look at Scarlett.

Finished in 2K, according to the ASC (nice article).

"The picture was finished in 2K and was cropped to 2.40:1 for standard theatrical exhibition and 1.90:1 for Imax."

So will the UHD disc have any extras on it, or is it just the film? It kind of reads like all the extras (including comentary) are just on the included BD.

The way it's been so far is that the BD is always included in the UHD SKU and any extras will be on that disc. However any commentary will be on the UHD as well (AFAIK).

When 100gb discs become common then they'll probably start putting them on the UHD as well. At some point they won't need to include the regular BD on every release, especially catalog.

That was a great article, but it slightly conflicts was I read in this article.

Here is the sentence that has be a bit perplexed.
"...Oblivion, shot on their premier F65 CineAlta camera with a 4K RAW workflow to an initial 2K Cinema DCP and subsequent 4K Master, then to a special, high bitrate BD x.v.Color duplication and, finally, to a Sony BluRay player..."

Obviously, they are talking about the presentation for a standard Blu-ray. What I am wondering is if they are going to use the same 2K DCP for the UHD. It would seem like a no brainer to keep the workflow 4K all the way down the line for a 4K final output and do a fresh 4K master from the 4K material.

Would they need a fresh one? It sounds like they already have one:

"and subsequent 4K Master"

It sounded like they made a 4K master from the 2K DCP. I know... that sounds weird to me as well. I just wanted to run it by your guys also.

You're right- the way it's worded, it's a little hard to tell if they mean that a 2K DCP was delivered to cinemas and then a separate 4K master was completed from the same elements or if they mean that the 2K DCP was upscaled to produce a 4K master.

In this interview, Claudio Miranda said it was finished in 2k even though Kosinski wanted a 4k DI: http://www.fdtimes.com/2013/03/29/cl...c-on-oblivion/

That's been posted before. I hate to chat shit about people without knowing them and what they're about but that article's full of inaccuracies, it's some ill-informed piece that pulls together a few links, puts 2 + 2 together and gets 5. Take the info about the "4K workflow", that's basically marketing spiel from the Technicolour piece on Oblivion, where they mention the movie a few times but most of it is about shilling what their post facilities can do, and not what was specifically done for Oblivion.

Well, I hope they make a new master from the 4K footage and 4K VFX. It would be crazy to use the existing 2K DI and upscale it. I guess we will have to wait until more info is available for the UHD release.

They DID do quite a bit in-camera so it'd really benefit from a rebuild using the raw F65 capture even if the VFX are upscaled, I can't see it happening though. But even if it doesn't, most of the upscales I've seen look sensational in UHD thanks to the better compression, wider colour and higher dynamic range. Several of them even resolve more detail than the regular Blu-ray anyway, if people can wrap their heads around such a concept. ("You mean 1080p Blu-ray doesn't always show all the detail from the 2K master?" "That's right, Timmy.")

Haha, you're right! Either way, Oblivion will be a day 1 purchase for me. I'd also like to see Joseph K's other movie Tron: Legacy in 4K/HDR/Atmos.

Man, Tron Legacy in UHD would be...I can't even think of a word to describe it. Trouble is we need Disney to actually announce UHD support, that'd be a start

Would love to have at least the isolated score on the UHD.

Problem is, I dunno if the studio considers the movie popular enough to really consider a rebuild from the raw elements. Yeah it's Tom Cruise and some other famous faces but the movie didn't really break and bank. I'd love it if they had a 4K master, though. Not the biggest fan of the movie but I still own it for the glorious A/V.

Geoff, I've had the same dirty thoughts about tron myself. Loved the movie. An improved soundtrack would be the icing. I have to admit, part of my dirty fantasy with Tron includes a 1000 nit oled for perfect blacks. Too bad part 2 was scrapped.
