This issue would drive me nuts, not just in noticing the softness...but it's the principle of the thing; the idea of paying for a performance hit. Pretty galling.
Yeah you get some upgrade with most UHD but for example Lucy you also have the HK BD with atmos so there there are no audio upgrade on that title for me. Oblivion I really want the atmos but not the less than stellar PQ presentation.

BD on top, UHD bottom. and no, my camera is not out of focus. I zoomed in and never changed my zoom # the entire time. I find wide/long shots to be the worst, up close shots are much closer to each other.

This is strange!

^ Horrible. The UHD is so botched it's a true technical disaster. As in, I think something really, really went wrong and they couldn't fix it in time before it was being pressed/printed etc. Great screenshots as usual. They portray the problem perfectly.

How on earth does something like this make it this far into store shelves on a line of products supposedly showcasing the best video fidelity we can have in 2016?

The UHD basically looks like a 720p upscale!

Watched this last night and really looked good on my setup. Much better than the BD played in my Oppo. Samsung JS8500 with the Samsung 4k UHD player. And yes, the JS8500 has been calibrated.

I think there are so many variables with 4k that each person will have a different opinion. Some people just plug and play their 4K player, while others tinker with all their settings to the point of being overly obsessed.

I'm not knocking, so please don't take it that way but, is there a chance that the samsung player is down-converting your resolution because you may not have it plugged into an HDCP 2.2 port on your TV? Assuming your footer in your post is correct you have your TV listed as 65KS9800. According the documentation (that I could find), it says "HDCP 2.2 can only use the HDMI(MHL) port." If the player detects that you are not on a HDCP 2.2 it will down convert to 1080P.

I'm only asking this because my by A/B results are nothing even close to this. I would say there are times when the res was similar, but by no means was it ever worse.

This is just one of the 5 or 6 recent UHD titles that I'm going to use "Dynamic" instead of "Standard" on my Samsung UHD player. It seems to make quite a difference for those movies where the colors are soft.

I understand that people will question the authenticity of what I post and what me and others claim. But there are far too many people reporting the same issue for it to be coincidence. I own close to 40 4k blu rays, and this is certainly the worst upscale I've seen based on extreme inconsistency throughout. It really does variety scene to scene with wide shots being the worst by far.

The pictures I posted are worst case scenarios. There are up close scenes where the difference isn't as dramatic. I'm using a samsung ks9800, my previous tvs were the js9500, hu9000, hu8550, Sony 850b 4k, samsung f7100. I keep my 4k blu ray player plugged directly into my tv, with the audio separately going to my AVR. I will retest when the oppo 4k player comes out, but we've already got multiple different units producing the same issue. Obviously actual screenshots would be great, but my pictures represent exactly what me and others are seeing.

If some of you can't see the issue, good for you. You can certainly enjoy it more than those of us that are irked by it.

My format preference without a doubt is the 4k hdr format. When done right, it blows away blu ray.

My format preference is the 4k sdr format; it's the best available for 99.9% of movies.

I meant in regard to Oblivion; some don't mind the softness, feel the HDR more than makes up for it...while others can't even bring themselves to view the 4K.

The digital bits writes that some kind of noise reduction was used. http://thedigitalbits.com/item/oblivion-uhd-bd

Is Universal continuing their DNR crap with UHD BD?!

The bits speculate the DNR was part of the DI and not specifically done for UHD.

Pictures of pictures are worthless to prove anything. Too many variables.

Ahh ok. I read that wrong. I read it as if the DI used for the UHD BD had DNR added to it.

What? the standard BD is not soft at all, so it can't be related to the DI

Bits seems a little outside the loop on this; this thread would probably be of great interest over there. I'm interested in, but not in the market for 4K yet...but I doubt Universal would want one of their high profile, debut UHD releases getting its ass kicked by the blu-ray. Maybe the botched Oblivion release could be the basis for the first UHD Blu-ray replacement program for those who ponied up for the upgrade?
