Oh, so you haven't got the UHD Disc, you're saying that the vudu version appears to be the same softened HDR grade as the UHD transfer? People (including me) thought you were saying that the Blu-ray in the UHD pack has been struck from the same overly soft transfer. I see what you're getting at.

Now playing on FandangoNow in HDR. Since it's HDR10, I can do some A/B between it and the DV version on Vudu.

Vudu, like Amazon and Netflix, have an average bitrate of around 16 Mb/s(HEVC)for their UHD content. WHich is only a fraction of the bitrate of a UHD BD. WHich can exceed 100mb/s HEVC.

I'm seeing the same issue with Lucy and Oblivion. Although I'm not sure if my BD app was updated recently. I do remember it updating earlier in the week.

Good :-) UHD discs can look very nice but also very disappointing as the expectations always will be extremely high - we are comparing to Blu-ray after all.

Not really a fan of the movie itself but I was about to get this thinking that the visual style would be perfect for UHD. After reading reviews and things about the PQ here, I guess it's safe to safe this one is not recommendable for me?

Yes but how would you rate the PQ of the UHD when compared to the 1080p Blu-ray? From what I understand the HDR grading is nice but the picture is somehow softer than the 1080p version?

I don't know you talk about? How the picture softer than the 1080 version?

The movie was 2K filmed!

Look fine pictures...I know the movie was 2K movie. DV picture look too much brighter. Check top left less black circle.

I still feel like this is one of the biggest blunders of the format so far (as far as titles go).
  • Shot in 4K and 5K
  • VFX Rendered in 2K (some post/editing done in 4K)
  • Digital Intermediate at 2K

This movie could have been one of the greatest demo discs out there. Most of the movie is daylight with beautiful crisp scenery, stars Tom Cruise, and has an awesome OST by M83. Not remastering the film for 4K was a misstep, but the bigger mistake was the 2K transfer. How in the hell does the image look worse than the blu-ray‽ I'm glad I borrowed this from someone else before purchasing myself.

I would rather liked to have had a straight up 2K port with Atmos and a HDR graded image instead of this terrible upscaled error, even a Darbee can do a better job. Obviously, having a 4K rebuild from the ground up would be ideal. I can't wait to see what Disney does with Kosinski's 'TRON: Legacy' once they jump into the UHD game, that is still one of my favorite discs to pop in and demo for people, even if the movie/story itself is a little bland.

So totally recommendable in the blu-ray format; bests the UHD for under eight bucks. An ironic buy in my case, as I snapped it up because of its 4k trouncing reputation. At any rate, I never looked back; it's a showcase performer and a real beauty to behold.

The only really good thing going for the UHD disc is the Dolby Atmos track.

Normally I would be against a straight 2K release as the TV would just up-convert it to 4K itself. It is impossible to watch actual 2K content with consumer and enthusiast level products without an up-conversion. In this case however, anything is better than nothing.

Although I love Dolby Atmos and was really looking forward to this UHD BD release in Atmos to make me invest into 4K hardware, I probably couldn't stand the decrease in picture resolution compared to the BD.

I hope Universal will re-release that film properly encoded on UHD BD as soon as possible.

Sony did this following the original, flawed BD release of THE 5TH ELEMENT, Paramount exchanged GLADIATOR.

Of course, Universal could also just re-release the original BD with Dolby Atmos...

Something may be going on because Oblivion is no longer available on BR.com. Maybe there's been a recall or a stop in the production in order to get it right.
