Here are the dynamic range stats for both the Atmos and DTSMA tracks for Oblivion.
The Atmos track is more dynamic, by total tracks average of 2.55dB, than the DTSMA track. There is more limiting applied to the DTSMA track which does help tame a few errant peaks found in the Atmos track but sacrifices some separation and depth in the mix. The DTSMA will be a bit more punchy and a bit more flat, which many prefer and in particular with the bass, while the Atmos track will breath a bit more and provide some latitude to turn it up some more with less fatigue. The Atmos center channel gets to breath a bit more and avoids canning the audio quality as much as the DTSMA track. Atmos: ITU-R BS.1770-3 Loudness: -18.13 LUFS DTSMA: ITU-R BS.1770-3 Loudness: -15.58 LUFS [Show spoiler]

That is interesting that you have to change the volume that drastically.
Here are a pair of pictures of the waveforms of the respective tracks. Sorry they are so small, guess I have exhausted my free space on the site. |

So is this just related exclusively to my personal surround sound settings? I have Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume/compression all off

I am not saying you are wrong to make that adjustment or setup is incorrect.
Simply an observation. I am rarely in the camp of "Louder is Better" but I do not like extremes in dynamic range either. Such as whisper quite dialogue then an onslaught of the "Wall of Sound", especially if the WoS is due to excessive compression brick walling, ugh. |

That's some great brick-wall compression going on there - thanks for the waveform pics.

Watched this tonight and thought this was a nice upgrade over the Blu Ray after sampling both and looking at various scenes. The color/hdr was great looking and as for it being not sharp I did add +4 in the oppo sharpness setting which looked good without adding any artifacts. The Atmos sounded great as well, My son came in and asked what movie was I watching because it looked good so he ended up watching it with me.

I popped this in last night and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the film. My only complaint about it is that it's too sleek. 4K clarity brings out the polish even more, giving the film a sort of artificial look all-around. A little grittiness would've gone a long way toward authenticity IMO. Anyway, the UHD looked good to my eyes. At no time did I think the PQ looked soft. Maybe I have the wrong idea about what softness constitutes in this age of 4K but I don't think this looks bad at all.
