It looks like they used the Blu-ray, upscaled it, added bigger black bars to get rid of the blurry edges, filtered everything and DNR'd the grain structure and altered the contrast and colors a bit.

Different look entirely. Colour temperature is drastically warmer compared to the colder BD. For all it’s problems the HDR grading is beautiful.

In motion it doesn't look as bad as the caps at all. The caps police need to just stop with that crap. It's far from telling the whole story. I think everyone agrees that it's not as sharp as the BD but it's also not as bad as what some are making it out to be either.

Nope. It really is just the existing DI given a heck of a beating with a low pass filter and they've cinched in the letterbox borders slightly to cover the ringing, as well as having a HDR pass of course.

In years past, comparing DVD caps to BD caps made some level of sense -- because the only visual difference between DVD and BD was resolution. That's not the case in comparing BD to UHD -- resolution is only one part of the PQ equation. What we're getting now are "sharpness" comparisons, nothing more. The OBLIVION BD looks sharper than the UHD, but that doesn't mean it looks better.

The UHD is still smudged to balls though, caps or no caps. The capsaholic comparison just confirms what people were saying all along...

Yeah I don't see any way the UHD could be better than the BD, the cap of Freeman/Cruise/Jamie Lannister pretty much confirms it. Even if the UHD was as sharp as the BD (let alone sharper), the warmer color scheme really looks dreadful. Skin tones are maybe the one all-around beneficiary.

Personally I love the grading of the HDR version (the caps are in converted SDR, remember) but I hate the softness, which isn't DNR but simply a very strong low pass filter, hence it not looking waxy (reminds me of the scene in Gladiator's UHD between Maximum and Proximo). I love the sharpness of the BD version but I'd rather have the HDR colour scheme. Combine the two and this would've been an extraordinary looking disc, one of the best the format has to offer despite a mere 2K finish, but as it is it's fundamentally flawed.
