Marvel mixes are the worst in this respect.

Dolby has down a terrible time promoting The Conjuring 2 in Atmos, while initially mixed in 7.1 and then upmixed to Atmos, it's use of the ceiling speakers really creates an unnerving palette of sound and tension to suitably scary effect.

Try like as Crimson Peak in DTS-X sound scary effect (ghost eer) and (creak ceiling)...scary music piano echo.

I really liked Oblivion when I watched it on cinema, dubbed in Spanish from Spain (Castilian Spanish, not the mess they do in Latin America with dubbs which even we, Spanish have a hard time to understan, not to say they sound someting like wird and a joke) and I really enjoyed it.
But I don't consider I have REALLY watched a film after I've seen it in its original languaje, in my case 99% of the time in English.
I have the Oblivion steelbook I bought from zavvi and I have enjoyed the Blu ray even more at home, in English and played on my 7.1 system displayed on a Philips 40'' 4K set with a 10 bit panel, I sit at around 1.5 metres from the screen.
I consider Oblivion as demo material both in video and audio, so I'll be double dipping with this, reardless if it' a 2K DI upconverted to 4K for UHD BD release.
I like the film, I think it looks outstanding on HD so I'm sure it will look even better on this release.
Day one for me.

You will like the Atmos track even more when you have gear to hear it!

Look forward to hearing The Conjuring 2 in Atmos!

Oblivion was the first film natively mixed in Atmos and downmixed to 7.1, 5.1 etc.

Yes, the only thing you should worry about is the HDR->SDR conversion. But the Panny player is the best for that conversion, with a lot of options

So no problems with getting picture and lossless audio on same hdmi with a 1.4 tv (without 2.0/hdcp2.2)? Seems the panny have nice HDR>SDR conversion.

This could be a good choice for everybody that don't want to invest in a 4K tv yet.

If only it wasn't so bloody expensive for what you actually get. The upcoming Oppo might be more bang for the buck. We'll see.

What kills me on this title is that they Shot in 8K and 5K, Rendered the VFX in 4K (mostly), but still have a 2K DI/Master. Has [Universal] or Kosinski talked about a 4K remaster?

I believe Oblivion is handled by Universal.
It was shot with the Sony CineAlta F65. But I don't think it was shot in 8K.

Ultimately, it only had a 2K finish. And Universal isn't one that splurges on many remasters. So I don't see a 4K remaster happening.

Correct, that's why I shouldn't start pre-gaming for my local soccer team and interneting at the same time.

There has not been any word. But I have hope that this will get a real 4K master because this was one of the first films to use the ACES workflow. And I imagine that would make a new 4K master as easy as upscaling the original DI, maybe easier since they have to create an HDR master anyways.

AFAIK the VFX wasn't 4K either. That weird article that people keep using as a reference is full of misinformation (like Sony having anything to do with the Blu-ray, for example ).

The combination of this movie's available production assets and Universal's interest in releasing this catalog sleeper as a format launch title give me hope and suspicion that some sort of (at least partial) 4K remaster might be in the works, but I guess we'll have to wait and see what we get.

If only the script could be remastered, too.

Yeah, this was a Universal movie. And only some of the fx were in 4k. Here's the relevant section from Claudio Miranda's interview:

Quote:
What influenced your choice of F65 camera for Oblivion?

Originally Joe was wishing for a 4K release of Oblivion but that didn’t happen. A lot has to do with finances and time crunch. VFX said that if you need to release in 4K, it’s another month and a half of time they would need for rendering and pipeline and checking and all that kind of stuff. It was also a huge additional cost as well and the studio didn’t want to go for that, even though Joe was really pushing for that.

The Oblivion website says shot in 4K.

Shot in 4K. The DI was done in 2K and it is released in 2K. Yes, we shot in 4K. It’s all captured in Sony’s 4K RAW format. We have the full RAW so I guess with their new de-mosaicing you can now go 8K if you want. It’s all a matter of how you de-mosaic the image, but our original intent was 4K.

A lot of the VFX work was in 4K for some of the shots, for stabilization, for mattes or plates and sometimes they did work in 4K, but the final render was for speed, I must say the 2K image is very sharp. It’s nothing to be sneezed at.
