This movie needs a new disc pressed with correct black floor setting. I don't understand why a faulty disc would be reissued with new packaging. Either fix the issue or let the old disc go oop. Surely there must be something else to repackage.

The black level can be corrected with a couple of clicks on the remote, that's the least of this disc's problems.

Time to flip a coin.
It’s hard. As soon as the “Thank You For Your Order” page came up, I said, “Ugh.” out loud. In effect, I dropped about $80 on a 4K disc I don’t want and will never watch and a 1080p BD I already own. Unlike you, I love the film, but $80 for literally packaging and tat was a really tough call, and one I feel more than a little stupid to have chosen in favor of. If you decide to pass, don’t feel too bad. I’ll be buying the next three titles they have queued (much more excited for those because both the packaging and the included discs are winners), but I flat out refuse, absolutely could not personally have less interest in, owning SHAUN OF THE DEAD, so even for us dedicated EBers, there has to be a break in the series of our respective collections sooner or later.

I joined the EB group buy on this site a couple of days ago. I love the movie, I love the HDR grade and Atmos on the UHD (and it’s not like the video is filtered to the point of looking like a DVD, you can still see the pores on Tom Cruise’s face etc.) and the new SteelBook looks nice and that slipbox is pretty... I’m excited to get my copy!

We all know there's nothing more annoying and groan-inducing than when somebody insists they remember exactly what a movie looked like in the theaters but, dang it, I'mm'a go ahead and do it anyway and insist fervently that the colder look of the BD much more closely matches what I saw in the cinema than the warmer and more colorful look of the 4K, so that's another black mark against the latter for me.

Yeah. Looking at screenshot comparisons it definitely looks like the BD has sharpening going on, I wonder if that was baked into the DI and they tried to counteract it with the 4K upscale. Could’ve done a better job and not taken it so far in the opposite direction, tbh. I’m curious of the workflow on this one. Does the IMAX master come into play at all? Am I right about the DI itself having sharpening baked in? I wonder.

There’s definitely more highlight information and color that they couldn’t pull out of nowhere on the UHD so I’m inclined to believe that was closer to the theatrical experience, though when I saw this my local theater was trash tier and it probably looked flatter than the BD for me and I can’t remember it enough to claim anything anyway.

Wow! That's the one I'm most looking forward to (along with Get Out). I'm curious, is it related to issues with the 4K or the movie or both?

I just watch this and agree that the black floor was too high.

I loved the HDR highlights from for example glowing leds in contrast to dark background though. Even if the background is not pure black the effect was still really nice. Gets presented very well especially on an OLED TV.

When do you think we can expect a non-DNR UHD ? This film is crying out for HDR, but I will stick with my BD because of DNR.

It's a filmout. Lionsgate did the same thing with 3:10 to Yuma. Who knows if they'll ever fix it.

It's not a filmout, it's just been filtered to fook.

I still loooooove the HDR on this though. And when the UHD is watched in isolation it doesn't come across as 'soft' necessarily, the perceptual impact of the HDR closes the gap, contrast being a close friend of apparent sharpness. I goose the sharpness admittedly just to give it a bit more kick, using the Reality Creation on the TV or the sharpness setting on the Pannysonic player, and I honestly have no complaints after that. I put this on just to check something last night and ended up watching like 45 minutes of it

I use the Super Resolution setting on my TV, to make it more palatable.

One of the worst UHD out there. HDR masks the DNR for sure but the DNR was super distracting to my eyes. This and 3:10 to Yuma makes a good DNR combo sitting few notches below T2.

I’ve always been a bit shocked, truth be told, at how many (to my eyes) glorious discs Geoff has quibbles about but yet he always gives this one a free pass. Personally, I fervently believe Universal owes us a do-over. I shouldn’t have to do any settings trickery on my end to force this placebo-effect-style into something I can tolerate.
