Wow! That's awesome. Even though I live nowhere near Sydney and will not ever get to see it, I am so glad that that is happening!

As far as I'm aware, Dolby Vision titles only are available in 2D at the moment unfortunately (I know that's the case with The Martian at the Dolby Cinema here in NYC). Still, if you want to see it in 3D laser projection, it should be available in the IMAX locations at the Chinese theater and Universal Citywalk in the LA area. They will also have 12 channel sound mixes with overhead speakers like Atmos.

As for the Atmos mix, given how consistently Disney has supported the format theatrically (they may not at home, but when was the last big movie Disney didn't release in Atmos) I would have been very surprised if Force Awakens hadn't gotten it.

I know this probably isn't too related to what is discussed in this thread but I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey and How the West Was Won on a Cinerama screen this weekend. The latter was shown in the original three-strip projection format from a beautiful IB Technicolor print, I think it was the most remarkable projection of a film I have ever seen, I will certainly remember it for a long time.

Makes me sad that this format didn't last.

Imax has actually posted a list of laser 3D and 15/70 2D locations for Force Awakens (I count 14 laser locations and 11 film ones)
http://www.imax.com/community/blog/s...s-on-sale-now/

If you want to see the film with the screen filling native 1.43 aspect ratio during the IMAX shot scenes, these are the only locations (also useful if people want to know the current "real" IMAXes)

Man, that is pretty limited. Is the Cinemark 17 on Webb Chappel still the best property in Dallas area for IMAX (to see Star Wars)?

Will be visiting family there for the holidays and here in Pittsburgh we usually make the trip to the nice Cinemark Mills IMAX in Tarentum.

Really wish there was a site that gave screen size (I know other sites give info on projection formats/ systems).

in-town Washington DC - National Air & Space Museum is playing 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' in 15/70 as well.

15/70 can actually be screened in 3D, so that isn't entirely correct. Just because it isn't a 2D print or a laser projector it may still be real IMAX.

I'm not sure what your point is. No-one's saying that 3D 15/70 doesn't exist (IIRC I've seen 6 movies that way ), it's that they won't be doing any 3D 15/70 engagements, probably because they want to keep the cost of the large format prints down to a minimum.

[edit] Someone in the comments on the IMAX blog said they heard that 20 15/70 prints were being made, that's it, and with the 3D version needing two (natch) that would mean either 10 3D locations or 20 2D locations, I think it's clear what option they've gone for. Not a single one for Europe thus far though, what a drag. If the BFI truly aren't getting one then the best I could hope for is that they get a 15/70 print for a limited run further on down the line, in the summer maybe.

I went to my one and only IMAX "movie" showing at the Cinemark 17 on Webb Chappel for the reboot of Star Trek. WoW!!! Was I dissapointed with their F**k*ng screen. There was a flaw, a black mark/tear/spot on the screen, that was big enough to be noticeable, especially when the film image was mostly daylight sky. IE, when the planet killer was operating. I was intently looking at the images on the screen to see what might come out of nowhere to come into that intense part of the flim. I kept being falsely drawn to that black spot on the screen. I paid top dollar to see that film in IMAX, and I damn well expected "perfection" for the presentation, and, I did *not* get it from Cinemark, on that visit.

That said, I would think that they would have corrected that flaw in the IMAX screen by now...

I remember seeing the Grimm Brother's Fairy Tales in the 60's in Cinerama.
For most of film, it was blah.... But man.... when that dragon filled the cinerama screen, from one end to the other, that was AWESOME !!!! What a big deal that was. My parents took me to see a movie in downtown Dallas.... at night !! But, no more Cinerama in Dallas now...

That is true. The DCP rules still don't have them including 4K 3D, plus Dolby said that Dolby Cinema in 2D gives a different experience than 3D. BTW, Cinderella, Into The Woods, Muppets Most Wanted, and McFarland USA weren't mixed in Atmos, so not all the Disney films were mixed.

I called the Citywalk IMAX and they said that they will be playing Star Wars in 15/70.

I'd trust that "confirmation" as far as I could throw it, I haven't read something as laughably misguided as that in quite some time. [edit] Well, not since the last time I read it: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...5#post11125869

I'm pretty sure the IMAX at my theater in Montreal (Cineplex Scotia Bank Montreal) is a real 15/70 IMAX!

it's not listed in the blog but I'm pretty sure it's a 'real' one. as I've seen multiple movies in 2D AND 3D where the IMAX shot scenes open up with a different aspect ratio...

oh well, i have my tickets purchased for Saturday at 4:30 in IMAX 3D (i could do without the 3D but that's a whole other story )

There's an IMAX about three hours away from me in Branson, MO that is showing Star Wars in 70mm so I'll definitely be making a trip down there. I saw Interstellar there last fall and it was incredible, biggest screen I've ever seen.

I was a little surprised to see some Dolby Atmos showings appearing in the ticket preorders, I'm going to try and catch it in that format as well.

Ach, the BFI have confirmed on facebook that their screenings will be 3D Digital, so that's 2K in other words. No 15/70 OR Laser on the biggest IMAX in the UK is an absolute travesty. I reckon it's because Odeon are running it, all they're about is maximising the profit with 3D sales instead of going for quality. Son of a bee sting!

The Scotiabank in Montreal has a 15/70 projector and a Xenon Projector. It will likely not be 15/70.

As for a theater list like Interstellar, I would prefer it: list all locations by laser (which should be at least 15 locations by then with AMC Universal Citywalk and Meteron finishing laser renovations if they haven't already, and maybe the other Smithsonian theaters for US locations, and some more in Europe in time for Spectre), film, and digital. But they only seem to have done so for Nolan's last two films, and probably won't in this case.

Someone else has said he called various IMAX domes and they stated they will play 15/70 prints (I think many are still film only as digital is hard to do on domes)

There is a list on IMAX.com.
