I think if you excitedly come back from a Transformers movie and then decide you're on the fence about Dunkirk, then you can probably just stop acting like you like movies.

Well it's a Christopher Nolan movie so it will probably do fine with critics.

I'm assuming those "scenes" were like TV spots?

Well there is a way to promote a movie and there is a way to over promote the movie. To be honest.....I think this year alone, the studio marketing teams have been doing way too many promos and tv spots and trailers for an upcoming movie. The promos for TKL did not bother me one bit......but to show no less than 5 promos just before the main feature, that's just over kill.

Yeah..... I have never seen so many spots between trailers for one movie before the main movie started. At one point I was going to say, "OK I get it, Dunkirk is coming.....enough already!"

I saw the four Dunkirk trailers before Transformers today. Not sure what they are thinking with all of the promotions, however IMAX will play a 15/70 shot film for longer than they will if there was no IMAX cameras involved. There is nothing from July 21st till Sept 1st and then till Sept 22nd in IMAX theaters. Dunkirk better perform well or IMAX is going to be showing this movie in empty theaters for a very long time. Seeing how IMAX is not exactly doing as well as they have in the past, I can see them really trying to promote the film.

Also, the movie is 1 hr and 45 min, so that is different and it will be interesting to see how people respond to this movie. I want to see it.

For a British war themed movie I think Warner's is overreaching

Inception maybe not as it wasn't filmed with IMAX at all, but Rises and Interstellar got just as long IMAX runs (Rises played in 15/70 locations all the way until Skyfall in November), and a huge push. And while IMAX wasn't as big then, The Dark Knight got a strong push with the prologue (which I saw with I Am Legend), and the native IMAX footage for first time in a Hollywood picture being a big part of pre-release marketing (too bad the digital IMAX alternates came in just a few months later, as I would've really liked to have seen it in IMAX, but with just one 15/70 theater the entire opening weekend was sold out a week prior to release, and tried to do a rewatch on weeknights around a month in and they were still selling out).

Given how barren August looks (Dark Tower seems like only release you would want to put in IMAX anyway) and IMAX's loyalty to Nolan, I'm not surprised by how long they are reserving for Dunkirk. If for some reason Dunkirk outright flops (I doubt it will do that even if it's riskier than Nolan's recent films), I imagine IMAX can adjust their schedule on the fly somewhat as they have done in the past, and late Summer is also the time some theaters typically close for laser projection, 12 channel sound, or some other renovation in order to be ready in time for the Fall movie season.

Ok....so I saw Transformers:TLK at Udvar Hazy last night for the 10:30 showing........... guess what? I was like the only person there up until an Asian couple came in 5 minutes before the movie started. When I arrived there was no one to ring me up for the ticket and I was like oh shit free movie, then the manager came out and was like giving me attitude about how when there are low ticket sales or no one shows up they encourage people to come back some other time. She acted like she did not want to be there past 1 am. You know what? go to hell! if the theater is scheduled to show the movie at 10:30, then I am going to see the movie at 10:30! I even suggested that she tell the projectionist to go straight to the movie since that will cut 20 minutes and I didn't want to see 4 or 5 Dunkirk spots ...again ... :\

Ok... some thoughts on the real IMAX presentation of this movie.

-Sound mix was lower than the previous transformers movies as it didn't feel as immersive as other IMAX audio presentations in the past.

-As known before there were various AR presented in this movie. At no time did it ever go full frame. :O (like during the Jakku escape scene in TFA or TDK Joker Bank Heist scene).

This is what is really confusing me now. During the Digital IMAX presentation at at the Regal IMAX in Manassas, there were several scenes that went FULL Frame...but at the Udvar it didn't show full frame....was the movie ever shot in full frame or were the scenes that I saw during the Regal IMAX presentation not full frame but as close to full frame as the screen could display compared to that of the size of the Udvar screen?

Dubstar where are you man? Need your thoughts!?!?!?

Transformers 5 never went full-frame on Udvar because the Alexa IMAX cameras can only output a 1.90:1 aspect ratio. If you show a 1.90:1 image on a 1.44:1 screen (Udvar), of course it will never fill up the entire frame. If you went to a "LieMAX" screen like the one in Regal IMAX (a 1.90:1 screen), then the movie will fill up the entire display.

Movies that were shot on IMAX film cameras like Dunkirk or The Last Jedi, on the other hand, will fill up the entire screen on a 1.44:1 display.

Hope this visualization helps:

Well the screen is much bigger at Udvar (twice as tall) and the projector is a lot better too.

62 feet tall: http://www.lfexaminer.com/searchResu...name=Chantilly

30 feet tall: http://www.lfexaminer.com/searchResu...e=Manassas+Reg

Even when you account for the empty space at Udvar due to the 1.9 aspect ratio for this Transformers movie, you still end up with a 45 foot tall image and it's over 85 feet wide, so it's 15 feet taller and almost 35 feet wider than Manassas.

Hey, man, if I were you I wouldn't pass up on IMAX Laser especially if the film was formatted at 1.90:1. You get a crisper, more brighter screen compared to the old-school IMAX 2K projectors.

Speaking of which, the IMAX projectors at SM Megamall SUCK. I saw Transformers 5 there and the image quality was slightly blurrier than expected, even when filmed on the Alexa IMAX cameras. I know Dunkirk's getting a 15/70 showing in SM Mall of Asia, but when's the Philippines getting IMAX Laser!?

Many theater owners probably don't want to fork over the cash. In the States we have a bunch of former 15/70 venues running the crappy 2k Xenon projectors because they didn't wait another few years for 4k Laser. Jumped on the digital bandwagon too soon. Unfortunately a lot of customers probably don't give a crap, so nothing will be done about it.

OMG I LOVE YOU MAN for posting that site lol.

I think it was in the TF:TLK thread that there was a frame where the image was boxed in. That never happened at Udvar or Manassas.

So what is to be expected that both Dunkirk and The Last Jedi SHOULD have scenes that go full frame?

If you're watching at Udvar, expect the entire screen to fill up. They have sequences shot with IMAX film cameras (basically on a different league from the Alexa IMAX cameras used on Transformers 5) so you're gonna get the real deal.

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssss......... ......... As for Dunkirk, if it's going to be playing for a long while I might just wait until the second week to see it and go late night, so I can sit whereever the hell I want and near dead center.

"Dunkirk" will have about 100 minutes of full frame IMAX footage that will fill the entire Udvar screen, and I believe "The Last Jedi" is going to have at least one scene in full frame as well

70-75% of Dunkirk will fill the entire Udvar screen, all 62 feet of height and 85 feet of width. Should be glorious.

Dunkirk Prologue sound was jawdropping in the new audio system that's part of the Laser installations. Blew Rogue One out of the water. Udvar has the Laser projector installed so I assume it also has the new sound system too.
