Yeah, I think even with Dunkirk Nolan kept the wide release extraction centered and consistent so that it was very easy for the post production team to do. I like the idea of playing with the framing more, though it will no doubt throw off things a bit for those scope IMAX screens (which could otherwise just go with the wide release framing if it was centered).

McQuarrie chose to shoot with Panavision's DXL cameras for pragmatic reasons (keep cost down and allow for easier shooting w/ medium-large format cameras). As much as I love to see it shot with IMAX film cameras, they're very cumbersome to use and they're expensive as feck.

If my suspicion is correct, the HALO jump sequence would be the other 'specially formatted scene' for the Fallout. Shooting such a scene with IMAX film would be very difficult since the cameras have about 2-3 minutes of footage and you have to worry about not breaking or losing one during freefall.

But you wouldn't appreciate that if you didn't have the two side by side. Still, selectively reframing it rather than a straight crop at least shows they're putting a bit of thought into it.

It is.
Saw Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom at the local IMAX and the "trailer" for M:I Fallout was a featurette about them shooting IMAX and Tom's actual piloting of the helicopter with some footage from other sequences in 2.40 and 1.90 - footage from the HALO jump was 1.90

Even if it's not real IMAX, at least McQuarrie and co. are taking advantage of the extra headroom. IMO it really justifies the IMAX experience for Fallout.

No, even if you didn't compare the two, seeing more of the frame extending below your focal vision (Ethan Hunt in this case); seeing more of the earth fall below, would subconsciously create that vertigo. However, the 1.89:1 frame is not tall enough for that vertigo effect to happen in an impactful way. MI: GP had that -

I. 4:3 Full Screen broadcast with IMAX height intact -

MI-GP_IMAX 3 logo removed.jpg

II. Scope BD -

MI-GP_IMAX 3 scope BD.jpg

The sides are shaved in the 4:3 because 1.33:1 is less wide than IMAX 1.43:1.

I would totally shit my pants at the Dubai sequence if I ever saw GP in IMAX (which is probably unlikely at this point, feelsbadman)

Antman and the Wasp had a few IMAX expanded ratio scenes. The longest was the San Fransisco chase sequence. I think 10-15 mins?
I am not too sure IMAX was ideal to use in that sequence. There was a lot of close ups and a few scenic shots but nothing breath taking.
This is getting annoying. Black Panther opens up but not Infinity War then Antman opens up again?

Enjoyable and funny.

Infinity War opened up for the entire movie (I saw it both in IMAX and standard, and overall preferred the IMAX framing even though some shots clearly had unneeded head room).

Every Marvel Studios release (remember Spider-Man is released by Sony) in phase three has used exclusive IMAX aspect ratio.

Wait my bad.... I was thinking about my experience with watching IW at Udvar Hazy, where they projected it in letterbox vs Regal Digital IMAX showed it opened up.

To steer the conversation to our next IMAX 1570 release...check this out

Seems like that first shot is our big AR transition from 16mm 2.40 (?) to IMAX 1.43 and that looks super slick, really reminiscent of the handheld -> dolly in the final ep of Mindhunter. It’ll be interesting to see how Damien handles the AR shifts. Definitely more than just the moon itself was shot in IMAX (the vehicle exteriors a-la Interstellar/Dunkirk, the launch at Cape Canaveral) but IMAX when trailer 1 launched said it’s a single ‘special sequence'...I guess we'll see what IMAX say when the new trailer launches.

Also on MI: Fallout, apparently McQuarrie does a smooth transition from scope to 1.90 at the start of the HALO sequence.

The trailer did say select "scenes" filmed with IMAX cameras rather than "footage" (that was I believe the case with TFA with the 5-minute Millennium Falcon chase sequence). Obviously, the moon landing will be an IMAX scene, but I have a feeling the vehicle exteriors might merit the same treatment too.

That HALO jump sequence in IMAX will be a huge treat.

Like, we know those were shot IMAX, question is if Damien will open those up. I know the trailer said 'scenes' but IMAX's marketing when the trailer dropped said 'special sequence'. In any case we'll just have to wait and see, the cut is locked now as opposed to when the trailer dropped so when the new one arrives probably next week we'll see.

I can't wait to see Fallout in IMAX this time round. Shame 3D screenings are being forced on UK IMAX audiences but I am curious to see how the post convert is. At least I saw it 2D first time.

I think going from the lunar lander to stepping out on the moon and expanded the frame would be an incredible place to do the transition.

I will be interested to see how many places will show First Man in 15/70 vs laser, and in some ways I think 1.43 laser sites might be the best version since looks like the film will be getting a 12 Channel mix unlike Nolan movies (saw the trailer twice in IMAX this week, in both laser and digital with 12 channel sound, and noticed some overhead effects even used in that).

I know a number of venues have already confirmed laser. I won't be surprised if there are as few prints as there were for The Last Jedi. Between the good point re: 12-channel mix and the 16mm footage in the film, seems laser will be best option.

So...12-channel and 15/70 are a no-go? As for the 16mm being blown up onto 65mm I'm not too concerned because, hey, this isn't a Nolan film, i.e. they'll give it every chance of looking as good as it can do.

A lot of movies get released in IMAX nowadays, featuring the scope 2.40:1 ratio only. No shifts, no expanded AR; like TLJ, JW2, Jumanji 2, Rogue One, Deadpool 2, etc.
Today, it has become the norm for 2.40:1 IMAX. 1.90:1 is the exception and 1.43:1 is the extreme rarity.
I'm sure neither "Glass' nor 'The Predator' will receive an expanded AR in IMAX (Shane Black didn't expand Iron Man 3 for IMAX either).
Everything that IMAX once stood for - an unusually tall screen with 70mm projection, occupying your entire field-of-vision, is a thing of the past.
2.40:1 is the new IMAX.

Just realized First Man comes out the week I’ll be in New York..again. Guess that’s another one I’ll have to see at Lincoln Square.

Heh. I've been going to the BFI IMAX in London since 2009, have made 20 visits in total. The first 4 movies I saw there were in fixed 'scope (three on 15/70 blow-ups, which was the norm before 2K digital LieMax and 4K Laser took over) so this is not a new phenom by any means, IMAX have been whoring themselves out for quite a while.
