And in the film, the flag isn't a big moment because it'd undercut the main emotional thing about the whole scene. Hell, the first drafts of the script didn't even have the One Small Step line!

The two IMAX (digital) I live closest to are playing "...Clock..." in 2D, and no mention of Thriller. Thriller has also been converted to 3D, so, I'm guessing only playing with "...Clock..." 3D showings.
EDIT: I also see mention that Thriller is only showing for the first week, so, today or tomorrow will be the last day. Last edited by benji888578; 09-27-2018 at 02:59 AM. |

[Show spoiler] , but, this was about going from 4:3 to 16:9, not quite the same thing). So, it might not be as big a deal, but, cropping top & bottom is generally not a good idea as you can cut main subject matter off, or get them too close to the edge, or otherwise lose composition. However, in this case, I would guess they opened it up as much as they could before cropping to 1.43:1, so, cropping could have been minimal.I'm not sure where you get the 5% masking for projection from...perhaps it is old school training to frame your film knowing that some of the edges will be slightly cut off in projection, and to allow 5% for this, but, unless the projectionist was terrible, it wouldn't be cut off by that much. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=3854 |

actually Universal didn't convert 'House' to 3D at all - it's just 'Thriller' that is in 3D.

5 copy.jpg As for cropping, all 35mm, 70mm showings have images at the edges masked off by the film gate, which stabilises the film during projection. I said 5 percent because I compared film frames and projected frames of the same shot and that was an educated estimate, not a statement. The entire image is never shown. This is even true in most digital projection, even though they don't have film gate. I have seen that in most projections, the theatre screen does not show the entire height of the frame, whether 2.40:1 or 1.85:1, in a CIH screen. There is always a thin strip of image at the vertical space that the screen does not accommodate. This is true for almost all scope screens. I noticed this in 'The Post' and 'Jurassic World 2.' For JW2, I saw more image on the top and bottom (about 2%) on a 1.89:1 screen than on the regular 2.40:1 screen. For 'The Post,' I could see a black cloth border on the screen that was masking 2% of image vertically. This is true for most digital scope screens I've visited. Does anyone know what sort of setup the IMAXes at the Kennedy Space Centre have? They're doing the First Man US press junket there this weekend and they held a screening last night. All info online seems to suggest it doesn't have any sort of digital - Xenon or Laser...and they didn't screen it in regular DCP either.
