I saw Halloween Kills tonight and tried to pay attention to this for you. There were definitely some scenes that shook the seats in it. Mostly towards the beginning.

Also, you don’t get the seat shaking like crazy every time they play the Dolby intros before the movie. I always notice it then because it shakes so hard it blurs my vision for a second, every time.

It kills me that we’re getting three different films with 1.43:1 material in the span of a month and the Smithsonian had to start renovating the Imax side of the downtown Air & Space museum this year … and the only car I had access to with which to drive all the way out to Udvar-Hazy was declared totaled last week.

I might just have to make a day of it on Thursday and do a last show of Dune / first show of Eternals double-feature.

It’s just that I’d really taken for granted how nice it was having a full-sized Imax that was easily accessible by public transportation, only for it to be closed for the foreseeable future because of a long term renovation of the building *after* being closed for more than a year because of covid.

Not to mention that there *was* another full-sized Imax right across the mall at The Museum of Natural History (that’s where I saw the first Thursday midnight show of TDKR since WB struck so many 15/70 prints) before the Smithsonian decided several years ago in their infinite wisdom to close that theater to make room for more exhibit space and - wait for it - a bigger cafeteria.

Sigh. Yeah that is very true. I went from a great IMAX 15/70 screen literally not 5 minutes from my house to having to drive from MN to Indianapolis which is a good 600 mi/9 hr trip. Even a major city like Chicago doesn't have a 15/70 projector anymore so I have to keep going east.

Similar kinda situation here, except the Science Museum in London has a 1.44 screen with a new 4K Laser install but they're still not booking any movies like they used to, just showing IMAX documentaries. What a fookin waste.

So I checked out the new My Hero Academia movie in a 4DX auditorium... holy [four-asterisk word]!!!!

This has got to have by far the most intense 4DX effects of any movie shown this year (so far at least) and the last half-hour especially is off-the-rails insane.

I can definitely see why the chains with 4DX in the US were quick to dump Dune in favor of this, which is attracting a much younger crowd, and has better 4DX effects (and a shorter running time).

By the way the anime epic is expected to come in at #2 at the domestic box-office.

Is there a big difference between 2K xenon, single laser, and dual laser IMAX? I'm thinking of watching Dune in IMAX and the closest IMAX theater to me uses digital projection. Would it be worth a significantly longer drive to attend a laser showing instead? I've never seen a movie on a real IMAX screen before so I don't really have any point of reference.

2K digital IMAX is a moderately large movie screen. Laser/70mm IMAX is like projecting on the side of a building. Very different experience, though depending on how long the drive is I'm not sure how much it would be worth it.

this makes zero sense, but I'm finding certain movies specifically from Universal / Focus Films sound perfect on the Dolby Cinema screen at Tyson's Corner, but others have a distortion, dialogue echoing/sibilance, as if the DCP's are encoded at different loudness levels (i.e, the louder it is, the worse it sounds).

anyhow, 'Last Night in Soho' yesterday on said screen was sound mixing and presentation at it's finest.

I refuse to go to Natural History out on principal and disdain for the Director of the museum who thought this was a good idea, I gave the Smithsonian holy hell on this decision.

The digital IMAX near me has a 67 by 89 screen so it's real IMAX, just digital. So I'm mostly curious how big the difference in picture quality is between the two.

Laser looks great, either single or dual laser (honestly I feel colors may be a bit more vivid in single laser). The difference is dual laser does bigger screens and can do 1.43 ratio. Digital picture quality is not as good, and those locations usually have older sound system too
