That's fair enough, they replaced the screen a few years back and that won't have come cheap so I guess they blew their wad on that. But I also read something with an IMAX rep re: Laser that any existing IMAXes with screens under 80ft wouldn't be at the top of the list for a Laser install anyway, so I think there's a bit of inertia on both sides.

On a slightly different note I'm so pleased the BFI nabbed a 15/70 print of Rogue One after the debacle of missing out on a 15/70 print of Force Awakens. It's not that Rogue had any embiggened IMAX scenes or anything but it's the principle of the thing.

Never gets old seeing Interstellar in glorious 15/70 film. Also, the Dunkirk, TDK, and TDKR prologues are an awesome freebie. It's weird hearing Tom Hardy's unaltered Bane dialogue in the TDKR dialogue...

Bring on Dunkirk in 15/70. My body is ready.

ARGH...what a waste putting RE:TFC in Imax 3d. This movie was so dark/drab with limited non cg enhanced locations that it would not have benefited from being filmed in an IMAX camera. There wasn't even anything special for the audio. I am really starting to think that we are paying that extra $$$ at D-IMAX screens for IMAX trailers. :|

While IMAX is working on a laser system for smaller screens, I believe that isn't coming for a while, however AMC Empire, AMC Burbank, AMC Northpark, and AMC Navy Pier are all getting "sound and seating enhancements" in the coming months (and pretty sure all those except for Navy Pier are well smaller than 80ft, and Navy Pier just didn't get the 12 channel sound system or new seats when it upgraded to a laser projector in order to be open for the holiday movie season so it's just a catch up), so seems like IMAX might be working on installing their updated sound system in certain locations first.

http://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/...20170119-01292

Also with 15/70 Dunkirk's run, IMAX doesn't have anything else scheduled until Inhumans in September, so given a weaker August and how IMAX gives longer runs to Nolan (Interstellar and Dark Knight Rises got a month and a half in all locations, and Rises actually played in 15/70 locations all the way until Skyfall in November) I'm pretty sure Dunkirk has IMAX until then barring it being a major box office disappointment, plus it looks like it will get an early limited release on film like Interstellar did.

Made a note about this elsewhere but it looks like Logan is getting both a 2D and 3D release in IMAX in the UK.

http://www.launchingfilms.com/releas...lmSearch=Logan

Does this mean we're getting it in both formats or just 2D over here? None of the marketing seems to imply that there's going to be 3D showings in the US.

I think it's just a 2D release in the U.S.- there have been a number of titles which have 3D releases overseas but are 2D only in the U.S..

Also any idea how reliable that source is, sometimes websites will just assume a 3D release when a title doesn't have one, if the BBFC rates a 3D version (since I believe they have to rate it for multiple formats unlike the MPAA) or official UK marketing mentions 3D then it would be clear.

It is only avaliable in 2D currently, at least that's what all the tickets currently on sale are for. Lego Batman however is getting 2D and 3D release in IMAX.

Edit: Tickets are going on sale soon for Beauty and the Beast in IMAX 2D & 3D too. Good to see they are finally giving people the choice of what to see.

I am so glad Deadpool was 2d only. Although that intro could have been cool in 3d if done correctly in post.

interestingly the way the Smithsonian made it near impossible to see "Fantastic Beasts" in 3D - i hope this isn't a trend to further limit 3D presentations

Yes, the current laser system is designed for the largest screens exceeding 80 feet. I am sure it will work on a screen that is smaller but the current digital Xenon system from IMAX will not exceed 80 feet or something like that. We have laser IMAX near me, its good and they certainly have done a good job with it, but its not enough for me to make the trip...would rather just save the time and go Xenon IMAX...I still prefer a smaller screen with masking done correctly over anything else. I will make the trip for IMAX film.

Same here, for 15/70 it's well worth the effort. I'll be booking up a seat for Dunkirk at the BFI just as soon as it's humanly possible to do so.

Announced a few hours ago, but the aspect ratio for Beauty and the Beast is being opened up to 1.90:1 for IMAX screens: http://www.slashfilm.com/beauty-and-...-aspect-ratio/

Hmm, might consider giving an IMAX viewing a shot then, even though if it's not filmed with large format digital cameras like Doctor Strange, Sully, and Captain America: Civil War were (shot with the Alexa 65 and Alexa IMAX).

I am a little surprised that IMAX hasn't tried to keep film around in 15 or 20 locations worldwide for 3-4 movies per year to keep the die hards happy. Even if they barely break even it would do a lot to keep people happy. It's kinda like when Apple kept around the classic iPod or the older MacBook pro just to appease a few.

Is it not feasable to install laser whilst keeping the 15/70 projector? For example at the BFI Imax why not have the best of both worlds? Or will 15/70 disappear once laser is installed.?

From what IMAX has said most projector booths don't have the size to keep both laser and 15/70. But looks like there are exceptions, Universal City Walk just played Rogue One on 15/70, and I hear Lincoln Square and Melbourne still have 15/70 capability (though I suspect it may just be for Dunkirk).

They absolutely sure can keep both. The size of a 15/70 projector booth is rather large. However, IMAX wants the upgrade to laser to not include a 15/70 capability if possible.
